Okay, guys here is a question from a friend of mine that is having problems logging on to rv.net...He is going to be reading these replies so do not think your responses are un-noticed...

I could not get logged on so here is my question. I have a 2007 Keystone Raptor 3612 fifth wheel toy hauler. Not long after I got it, it started having problems with tires blowing out. It had Carlisles on it (ultra crt2357r15). The manuf said that they had not had any problems with these tires with a load rating of "D". The next model year for the Raptor, they started using 16" 235 80 r16 tires with a load rating of "E". So, I complained enough that the manufacturer sent me a set of 16" wheels. The rim does not have a psi rating, but has a load rating of 3200 pounds. I would like to know if anyone has tried to mount 16" 285 in the place of 15" 235's. If so, has there been any problems with the larger tires? Also, will the rims handle the 85 psi "E" rated tires?

If the wheels are rated for 3200 pounds I'm sure they will handle the psi. Replace the tires with USA made LT tires not China made.

If the rims are the stock rims that came with your Keystone they are probably rated at 65lbs. For the E rated tires you need rims rated at 85lbs. That is the reason that I am still using D rated tires on my Keystone.

3200 lbs. is at or above an E rating and should be fine for 80 psi. Do yourself a favor and install metal valve stems to increase reliability.

If it was mine I go with the 235/80R16 E rated. IMO rims are fine.

Your rims are rated at max 3200#, regardless of how much tire pressure you have. You can run a ST235/80R16 Load Range E tire at 80 psi. The tire has a max load of 3420#. But because of your rims, you are actually limited to 3200# max weight so it doesn't matter how much air pressure you run.
Be sure to balance the tires when you get them.

really just amazing that a manufacturer would send out a 36ft 5th wheel with 15" d-rated tires...

for all the grief given to the trailer tire makers on these boards, I think the real guilty party is the trailer companies....

I agree with above poster. Go with the E load rating. Good luck.

sounds like good advise so far.

Just a thought on using a 285 tire on a trailer. Not a good idea. Trailer wheels come in narrow 5.5" to 6" widths. A 285 tire has to wide of a tread/section width for a trailer wheel. Mount a 285 tire on a trailer wheel and the tire will ride on the center of the tread.

Also the 285 has a wide tread that doesn't slip/scruff easily when making those hard turns. Thats one big reason a good tire size for a trailer that size is the narrower 235/85 section width tire. Those wide tires just add even more stress to a trailer suspension.

Do a google on Carlisle ST tires or ST tires in general. Lots of neg feed back from trailering webs of all types.

Stick with a good USA made LT tire such as the Michelin XPS Rib LT E all steel ply carcass tire that is recommended for commercial trailer service. There are other excellent LT 16" E fabric tires that are recommended on the web for those bigger trailers.

Our last 5'er before the Designer we have now had 15" D tires which I knew was way too small for that 5'er so I immediately wnet out and had 16" E rate LT tires on the 5'er...big difference in handling and stability!

Also consider our current 5'er weighs about 14000 lbs wet and we have G rated tires on there...
