Have that little drive for my older Gateway computer and it works really well.
Bought new thumb drives that are supposed to be backward compatable however none work in the Gateway.
Anyone know of source for the 1.0 (know they are older) thumb drive so that I can have more than just one?
God Bless

Most USB 2.0 products are backward compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1. It's possible that the older thumb drive came with drivers to make it work. I don't have an answer as to why the newer thumb drives don't work but one possible solution is to install a card that has USB 2.0 ports on it. What OS is this machine running?
This card should do the trick for you: USB 2.0 Card

If you are running winxp or even win2k, you shouldn't have any trouble with flash drives or thumb drives as you call them, working. I haven't found any winxp computer that won't find a flash drive. These drives are now dirt cheap and are one of the best "inventions" in recent years. Good luck.

My local Target store has 256 meg drives at the registers for about $3. They HAD some 512's in the computer accessories/camera area a month or two back- about $10. And K-Mart still carries some older stock 1 Gig dongles too. On and off, a nearby "Big Lots" (closeout store) has some of the smaller/older thumb drives- 256's and 512's.
I think these are USB 2.0 but you could try one of the 256 meg drives for a song. It might work. I wonder if the newest multi-gig units are still backward compatable? A year or two ago I had problems with some of the 1 gig SD cards in my camera. I looked around and found enough 256's and 512's to keep it supplied. They cost as much as or more than the newer, larger cards.
You might find that a friend that has a couple laying around that are no longer used.
Good luck,
Bob

Sounds like a hardware issue, I have similar problems on my old Dell laptop and my oldest Linux system. The BIOS on both just will not work with USB 2.0 devices. Finding real USB 1.x drives is a major challenge and most 2.0 drives are not compatible, regardless of what they say. Mostly they work with USB 1.1, but not 1.0.
64MB thumbs will almost always work, if you can live with that size.
