I am looking for advice on...you guessed it TIRES.
SHORT STORY:
I am looking for tires for my DW's Minivan...
It is a pontiac montana EXT.
We do not use it as a our TV but some do use minivans as their TV so I thought this would be a good place to ask.
What are good tires, what to avoid!
LONG STORY:
Three years ago the DW's van needed tires. We only got 23,000 miles out of the original tires! Which I think sucked. So we went shopping for new tires. I researched and researched and decided to get the goodyear Assurance triple tread 80,000 mile tread life warranty! I read reviews and all was well. Today 3 years later we now have 54,000 miles on the minivan and the tires are gone. Tread will not pass inspection. Back to the tire dealer I went. They measured the inside of the tire. They measured the middle of the tire. They measured the outside of the tire. I stopped them when they tried to measure my spare tire! After 20 minutes of 2 different guys measure the tires it was decided that they were worn out after 31,000 miles. Less than half of the tread life warranty. The guy did some figures and came back with 32% used and they will give a 68% value on new goodyear assurance triple treads. Or they will match the value to another goodyear tire. If they do not last again they will stand behind the warranty again whenever they are worn out. I need to pay the 32% cost of the tires. Does not sound too bad to me but I wanted to see what others have thougt. It will still cost me about $200 for the new tires but the tires are $135 each with free mounting, balance, Nitro, and stems.
What do you all think?
Should I settle for the new tires at a 68% discount or try for another brand?

Well you're not able to touch the cost if you turn down the $200.00 price. My self thinks I would prefer a longer lasting tire. I think your giving up alot of good miles that you would get from known better lasting tires.I say go to TireRack.com where you can read actual customer comments on various vehicles, operating conditions & tread life, etc.I selected KUMHO SOLUS there for a Taurus based on quiet running ,ride & tread life comments. They have 45K now & 8/32 tread remaining depth on fast flowing rough roads in Orange cty. metro area. Goodluck with your decision.

That is one of the reasons I have not been a fan of Goodyear. They seem to wear out abnormally fast. Now, having said that, your minivan is probably very hard on tires because of the way it is built. I would personally look at Michelin or some other brands before I spend another dollar on the Goodyear junk.

I sounds like a pretty good deal, at least worth another try.
If you want to switch brands the best advice I can give you is check out Toyo. I always get Toyo for replacements on our cars and truck. But they are not cheap!!
Except for this last time I bought Michelins for DW's Lincoln. Michelins are also very good. I fell into them in Portland last year where a Lincoln dealer was going under. Sold me 4 new Michelins mounted on 4 new chrome spoke Lincoln wheels for $500. I was very lucky to have ran into that deal. Felt sorry for the dealer though.

Regardless of the circumstances, you will be hard pressed to replace 4 tires, including balance, mounting, stems, etc. for $200. Why spend more somewhere else for basically the same thing?????
On a side note, don't be so quick to blame the tires. Driving style can dramatically affect tire mileage as well as fuel mileage.

The Goodyear Assurance Tripletread are not cheap. They are like $135 per tire! I have no problem paying for a good quality tire. I did not consider what it is costing me now for the additional tires. I was promised 80,000 miles and I only got 31,000. Now I need to pay $200 for new tires that I still do not think with get me to the 80,000 with the 1st set included. If I knew the new tires would get me to the original 80,000 miles I would feel more comfortable with them. I am now thinking of the Michelin Hydroedge!
Anyone use either of these on a van. I have also thought about an LT tire if I can find the size for the van.

The way the tire game is played is to sell you a tire with a long warranty like 80,000 miles, and then prorate the price of the new tires when you don't get the 80,000 miles as promised. Maybe they exist, but I've never seen a passenger car tire go 80,000 miles. If you get 50,000+, consider it a decent long-lasting tire. Just my 2 cents.

I would give the Goodyears another chance, but perhaps a different tire. We got over 50,000 miles out of the factory Goodyear Eagles on my wife's Neon before they had to be replaced. We replaced them with the cheapy Goodyear Viva 2 tires at Wal Mart and now have about 20,000 miles on those and they are still good, should last another 20,000 miles easily.

Use the warranty, pay the difference and enjoy the new tires.
Don't forget to rotate them. Minivans are notoriously hard on front tires.
Half the warranty is a bet you will trade the vehicle. If you hang on it is a great value.
