Hi,

We head out Sat morning and we were planning on taking I-80. Should we take 50 instead? How much extra time will it add? Is 50 narrow? There's only one spot that shows we would have a delay on Sat morning on 80. But if the road is that bad and that narrow, maybe we should do 50. What would you do?

Thx, Lori

In the many years I've been traveling Donner Pass I have only traveled it once when I was required to chain up, and I can tell you it was mecessary at the time. I always thought they waited too long to put up the chain requirements.

Lori- Not sure where you are headed but if you head up 80 on Saturday you will miss most of the repair congestion. You will find some very rough areas of road surface. As for the narrow stretch at the border, take it slow and stay in the right lane marked for trucks and you should be ok.

Now, if California would just fix the Grapevine section of I-5. That is another rig battering stretch of road that I now avoid.

We just avoid I-80 over the Sierras. We prefer to take the scenic Hwy 88 over Carson Pass.

It will add a fair amount of time to take 50. Taking 50 will add a lot of two lane road and the part that has the 1,000 ft drop over the side from the summit down to the Tahoe valley floor will get your attention.

I just drove it on June 1 and, while the surface is not smooth for a lot at elevation (thats why they are rebuilding it!) it is not that bad. In an active construcion zone, just use the right lane and take it at a speed you are comfortable with and you will be fine.
