I'm no expert, but cooking in Dutch ovens is pretty darn easy once you've seen it done once or twice. In general, the most common sizes seem to be 10", 12", and 14". They are either "shallow" or "deep". I think my first one was a 12" shallow. It's a pretty good overall size, but a max of about 6 people if cooking a one-pot dish. The second one I got is a 14" deep, and I really like that one. It's HEAVY and hard to store (better get a big truck with flatbed/boxes ) but is the primary one I use now. The depth makes it much better for doing big vats of food like gumbo, jambalaya or a large roast where you don't need a lot of surface area but you need a lot of volume.
Just about anybody that uses dutch ovens much ends up with several of different sizes anyway so you can't go too wrong. Having more than one allows you to have one for making a dessert which sits there cooking while you are eating the main course. I'd probably start with a 12" shallow and plan on getting a deep later. The other thing is that once you've used it a few times, you find you can so easily cook for a lot more people. I've never been much of a cook but I've gradually gotten to the point where I like to pick one night to try to cook for the whole gang that we are camping with and you can cook up enough food for a good 10 people or more with a 14" deep.
Don't get one that has a lid without a lip at the edge! I am also not a fan of the aluminum ones either (though I have never owned one.)

PS: You should also know that our first course/appetizer was some smoked country style ribs and stuffed/grilled jalapenos. Since we had the smoker going anyway that's why we decided to smoke the chicken after the ribs were done (and give some recovery time to be hungry again.)

Can I be Marc's friend too? And of course you and I go way back, I'm not sure how far back but...back, at least a couple trip reports. I'd say you lucked out on that trip and can see that 1 day was definitely not enough. That's not Rock Creek Lake is it? Maybe Lundy Lake? If you let me in on it I'll send you an Outfitter badge!

Actually Murgatroid, I was thinking all the rvnet whazoo's, not yahoo's. And of course there is only one rvnet whazoo so problem solved, no swarms!

Actually, I am leaving tomorrow after work heading for California. I'd be asking for suggestions on camping, but really we are just making a beeline for Lancaster to drop off the camper and then returning to Vegas where we are departing for an 8-day Grand Canyon rafting trip. Afterwards, my wife is flying home and I'll be heading back to Lancaster for an overnight (either in the cab of the truck or perhaps a motel) before picking up the camper at Lance Monday morning. Then I have two days to get back to Denver for work Wednesday morning. I hate not being able to do a little exploring while being all the way out there - but I'm burning up those vacation days on this trip already - 9 days of it in fact - and only a few nights in the camper.
