After 7 years on this website, I've been banished from my former group, forced to find a new home. Labeled as a traitor, a Benedict Arnold, I come here seeking new friends and a new home.
I betrayed my brotheren in the Truck Camper forum, I purchased a Toy Hauler last week.
My new toy is a '09 Cyclone 4012. And unlike my camper(which I kept), I definitely can't say "Oh, I barely know it's back there".
Picked it up on Thursday, loaded it up, and went on my baptismal run this weekend. Found the usual "new RV issues" and made up a punch list for the dealer. Taking it in today and dropping it off.
Weights--- I didn't have a toy in back this weekend, just a full size BBQ, Kegerator, and a big Costco 3-burner camp cooker. Bout half a tank of water, 10 gallons of gas and full propane.
Hauled great. This is my first 5'er. It hauled better than any travel trailer I've had in the past. One thing I did readily notice, was the tendency of the trailer to make the truck, for lack of any better description, "wobble". Go over a bump, and when the trailer hit the bump the truck would "wobble" in a forward / backward feeling motion. Going down the freeway, even with the cruise set, the forward/backward motion feel was enough to make the trip uncomfortable.
Any thoughts as to what can be done to improve it?
Truck is stock, with the Camper/Heavy Service suspension package--13 leafs per side. No airbags, nothing else.
WELCOME! All great people here. And we won't hold it against you if you still have your truck camper. Many of us (me included) started out with one.
The motion you are describing is "chucking" and is quite normal with a 5er. I here the air system pin boxes virtually eliminate this but can't say from experience as I don't have one.
Welcome! I too moved from a truck camper and enclosed trailer to a 08 Cylcone 4012. We love the Cylcone and have had only minor issues that the manufacturer and dealer fixed.
I've had the chucking issue you are getting and I'm now looking into either a air hitch or a new hitch pin to help deal with it. From my reading here, it isn't an uncommon issue with 5th wheels particularly the large ones.
We take your tired, your poor huddled masses and TC'ers, as a former TC owner (Lance) Welcome! Good people and good info in this forum. I just wish we kept our TC for quick getaways, oh well.
Look into the air ride type pinboxes, I have the 5th Airborne and
really like it.
Putting some toys in the back will help with the chucking problem. This offsets some of the weight that would have been pressing down on king pin. if your fresh water tank is behind trailer axles, filling up with fresh water should help too.
I've considered an air-ride pin box too, but haven't coughed up the money yet.
You'll find we accept everybody here... even those of us that sell our Toy Haulers hang around!
As for the movement, airbags may help to give it a more solid feel. The bumping feeling isn't going to totally stop though. There are a few things. The haulers like weight on their rear end, that helps to leverage the weight of the king pin. Half tank of water will also slosh around, and haulers have big tanks so as that water moves its going to cause you to feel some movement.
On your next trip take the toys and see how it goes, play with your water tank and try to avoid 1/2 take full if you can.

My guess is that you are sitting right on the overload springs in back. Adding air bags will make a giant difference. I would do the airbags before going to an air hitch.
Welcome!
