We bought a 2001 KZ21 last year and took it to Disney in Fla. We also took it out 3-4 other times last summer. Everything worked fine. This year we took it to Williamsburg, etc. but now the stereo does not work, nor does the antenna booster, the refrig. works on ac but not on dc power. Dome lights work on dc power, water pump works, but the water levels and battery power indicator lights do not work on dc, works fine on ac. Also noticed LP gas leak detector does not work on dc but works on ac. I checked all fuses and breakers in breaker panel. All ok. Fuse on back of stereo is ok. Went in access panel to refrig. on outside of rv and removed a black box and noticed two fuses, both ok. The refrig. is not getting a spark. Should the heater work on both ac and dc? It works fine on ac but then went cold when power was unplugged. Appreciate any help anyone can provide.

>> This post would likely get much more responses over on the Tech Issues forum. <<

Make sure I got this right, some stuff works on DC/Battery power, but some stuff doesn’t? All DC stuff works fine when plugged into AC? What your saying baffles me too.

When plugged into AC, the charger/converter supplies power to the DC circuit panel with circuit protection from 2, 30 amp fuses on the DC side.

When on DC/Battery power, power is supplied from the battery to the circuit panel with circuit protection from a 40 or 50 amp fuse and/or a DC circuit breaker (usually located near the battery or underneath along the frame towards the front).

In either case (AC or DC/battery operation), I’d think it should be an “all working” or “nothing working” situation (not some stuff working and some stuff not working).

The stuff that doesn’t work while on DC/Battery power is much more than what would be on just a single circuit, so the problem effects stuff on multiple circuits.

A few things to check…
- For the stuff that drops out while on DC/battery power, use a multi-meter and find out what side of circuit is lost (meaning the Hot/+ side, or Negative/- side).
- For the stuff that drops out while on DC/battery, identify what circuits they are on and verify if all, or just some of items on that circuit are affected (You might have to be plugged into AC in order to help find them all).

first, your fridge should only work on shore power or propane. not 12v. the only 3-way fridges are generally only in popups. i haven't heard of a hybrid with a 3-way fridge.
second, what's the condition of your battery? i would have that checked.
third, the furnace is propane only. not AC. you do need 12v to run the fan, if you don't have shore power.

i suspect you have a bad battery or your converter isn't keeping it charged up.

Ok so evrything works on shore Power, so you converter is working. It sounds like your battery not fully charged. If you know that it is fully charged another thing to check is the automatic circuit breaker, mine is located on the tongue right by the battery it is a small silver item with two bolt connectors on it. Mine went bad over the winter and would give me very strange dc items somethings would work and others would not. you can just disconnect it an tie the 2 wires together to test it.

Does the stero have power? Are the stero and antenna booster close together?

Check for wiring damage from varmints.

Connecting the battery backwards is a common rookie mistake as is not disconnecting it between trips and having it dead in two weeks.

Thanks Chuck S, I am glad you inserted the word "common" in your reply as I am already feeling a bit dumb. That was the problem. When I reinstalled the battery this spring I saw the black wire coming from the frame so I just thought that was the ground wire. It was coming from the frame but it is connected to the auto reset circuit breaker which I didn't even know existed. Jmcanzo suggest the breaker could be bad so the first thing I did was replace that, which was only a $5 part. It was so badly rusted it was destroyed trying to get the nuts off. Will be camping in Ohio sometime this summer as I have a brother in Mansfield, on our way to Manistee, Mich. I have a cousin who owns a campground in Manistee. Thanks for everyones input. Mark

We were all rookies at one time. Someone described an expert as someone who'd made all the mistakes.

that's why installing a battery disconnect switch is a good move. you don't have to keep taking the battery out in the off-season.
