We are traveling from DFW to Ft. Benning in July. It looks like Jackson, MS if half way, so we are looking for a place near Jackson to overnight and then a place near Ft. Benning to spend a couple of days. I would prefer to stay relatively near the interstate in the Jackson area, but am open to recommendations. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can not help you with info about Jackson, MS.

Curious about your visit to the Fort Benning area. If you possess a military or DOD ID card, you can stay at the Family Campground on Fort Benning. They have a very nice campground there plus if you are ever there sometime without your RV they have lots of nice little cottages and some very nice challets available to rent.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in that area.

The famcamp at Ft. Benning is nice. We stayed there once in May and then tried to get reservations over the 4 of July, but the CG was full. If you can stay there, I would recommend you make reservations.

DW was in the Army, but that was about 25 years ago, so she has no DOD or military ID. We looked at the park on base and she may try to call on it to see if there is any way.....I am not holding out hopes on that.

My wife's baby boy is graduating Ranger school the middle of July and this is probably the last time we'll get to spend much time with him before he ships out to his duty station in Italy. Wonder if they have RV parks there? lol

Thanks for the input. We'll see what we can come up with.

See if the soon to graduate 'ranger' can 'sponsor' you into a camp site at the on-base family campground. Generally base/post commanders will allow assigned members to 'sponsor' one unit into the famcamp.

This makes you eligible for staying at the fam camp there and it is a very nice camp. If you do not take the rv, the chalets are fantastic.

In Jackson consider LeFleur State Park.
A few miles north of I 20, very close to
I 55, IN the city, quiet, wooded, lake.

If you find you cannot get into the Famcamp at Ft Benning, there is a decent COE campground called Bluff Creek about 10 miles south on the Alabama side of the river, same side as the Famcamp.

Only problem is, without decals on your vehicle, you'll have to go around to the front gate to get a visitors pass to get on post.

Jackson, MS area: Consider Roosevelt State Park, Morton, MS, 30 miles east of Jackson and just off I-20. Try sites in the newer section on the other side of the lake from the entrance. Click here for details.
