MS Streets & Trips shows to head for I-476, follow it south to I-95. I-95 South to DC Beltway. I-95/I-495 (South) around the DC Beltway to MD Rt 5, MD Rt 5 to US 301 South. US 301 South to US 17 South all the way to Topping. Or, at Tappahannock, VA head east on US 360 to VA Rt 3 and then down to Topping. About 380 miles and 7 hours.

There's a good possibility that your Good Sam directions take you that route due to the tunnel on I-95 at Baltimore. In looking a little closer, I-695 South just above B-more wouldn't be bad to avoid any problems, although you can go through the tunnel with propane tanks - 10 pounds of propane in each tank with a max of 10 tanks. Up to you, you know what you have. If you take I-695, it would only be logical to then hit 295, the Balt/Wash Parkway. A MH will be okay, it's only restricted against COMMERCIAL vehicles and trucks (10 tons or more) on the Parkway. MH's are okay on the parkway here where I live in MD. 295 will then take you down to the DC Beltway, I-495, and you want SOUTH towards Richmond. Then take Exit 7A off of the Beltway onto MD Rt 5.
I've looked at the map and just can't see going to I-81 would be faster, but then again, I haven't traveled all the routes suggested. I have, however, traveled from the Poconos over to and down I-81 and am very familiar with the I-66/US 17/I-95 area. Just seems going that far west (to and down I-81) when you can pretty much go almost directly south, is taking a person out of the way.
Going via I-81/I-66/US 17, etc looks to be approx 420 miles and about 7 hrs/20 min - depending on speeds plugged into the MS S&T program. Other route, including the I-695 to Balt/Wash Parkway sections comes out to 374 miles and 7 hrs and approx 5 minutes. The time isn't a big issue, but the almost 50 miles would mean something to me. Of course, time of day would also enter into the mix. I wouldn't want to go through/around the big metro areas at high volume times, considering there's a couple of them: Chester Co, Wilmington, Balt, DC.
Good luck on whatever you choose.
