That's the story I've been told. Is it true?

Good morning. Canadian medical regardless of province covers you anywhere in the world but only up to what the procedure would cost in Canada. This is why it is so important to have supplental medical insurance in the US as it is very expensive. It is less expensive everywhere else in the world but many would advise to have supplemental insurance when travelling regardless of destination. After you get your bill for whatever services you needed your provincial plan will cover the first part of the bill and your supplemental the rest. In many countries that have comparable prices to Canada the supplemental will never have to step up to the plate to pay the rest as it won't exceed the amount covered by Canada health care (via your provincial administrator). Of course this is done through reimbursement as Canada Health doesn't pay up front.

This is why expatriate insurance is so much cheaper if you specify you won't be travelling to the US. The US has the most expensive healthcare in the world and the insurance companies have to cover themselves.

Hope this helps. Happy travels.

Yes and the same goes for BC! The problem is that We have to cross that area in between Canada and Mexico. If Only there was a way to get only enough Extra Insurance to cover Us for the short time We travel through the States!

No Canadian with any knowledge of our horrible Public Health System should travel outside Canada without supplemental coverage. Even though some health costs in Mexico are coverd by your Provincial Health Plan not all services will be reimbursed at a reasonable rate. B.C. wil only pay $75 a day for in hospital emergency services. I dont think any of the Provincial plans will cover ambulance transportation. Very few will cover medications. Just imagine that you are in P.V. This area does have some decent hospitals. However if you had a heart attack your local physician might recommend that you be flown to Guad. Your Provincial Plan will not cover the transportation. With a good supplemental policy you could be flown back to Canada. Your RV and family would also be taken to Canada. This whle subject is very confusing. The Canada Health Act is interpreted differently by each province. The Canadian Snowbird Association has lots of info on their website.
CSA

Note that the information they provide is 3 years out of date! Their insurance is very expensive!

Some folks call it the United States. Here in Maine we host Canadians who may not live long enough to wait their turn for an MRI in Canada and they visit our hospitals. I'm not sure what the payment arrangements are.

MRI's are readily available at any hospital in Canada.

I understand some have supplementary insurance through their employers, or private, or have very deep pockets. And some Canadians, like many from the US who are shut out of the expensive US health system, go on medical holidays to the excellent commercial and affordable hospitals in Mexico, Indonesia and India.

By the way, Wm. I think the colored maps that are in your signature, may be the most complete I have seen in any forum. Come on down to the Yucatan to fill it in some more.

Once we retire we'll have more time to travel further. Four or five weeks a year of vacation leave plus it's over 2,500 miles from Maine to the closest Mexico border. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Mexico.

There are several hospitals located in the lower mainland / Fraser Valley area that I know of that do not repeat do not have MRI's and won't for several more years.

Richmond General Hospital is currently renovating it's diagnostic imaging centre for the installation of an MRI sometime this fall.

I get more than a little annoyed when people make statements that are blatantly false.
