Microsoft is offering some upgrade versions of Windows 7 for a reduced price until July 11.
Here is a link on Best Buy

Microsoft Store also has the Ultimate version available also, but no discount.

If you know you want it here is a chance to save some money.

This weekend only, Micro Center stores are issuing preorder coupons for Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $39.99 and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $89.99. That's $10 cheaper than other places are offering. The catch is that you have to go into the store, can't order on-line.

Does that mean that Windows 7 upgrade is now available or are you buying it and waiting a long time for delivery. I don't see the Windows 7 clean install version available yet? I suspect that a computer built for XP will not run Windows 7 well. It will be good to see a thread about how people like Windows 7.

At the Microsoft upgrade site they have a downloadable application that will analyze your PC and give you information on whether it will run Windows 7 and it also advises of any compatability issues with your periperals or applications. It is the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Also, at the Microsoft order site they show Windows 7 preorders as expected to ship on Oct 22.

Just as an aside, Apple has also announced it pricing for OS 1.6 (Snow Leopard). If you buy a system between now and Christmas (IIRC) it's free. If you currently use Leopard, it will be $29.

You are buying the software ahead and getting it in October when it's realesed. ( prebuy) windows 7 works great on lower powered systems but run the compatbility check first. 7 is Vista stripped down cleanned up and theway vista should have been!! All the revierers say it's great ... Why not download it and run the release candidate if your concerned if it isn't what you want then go back to xp
if you have a older computer your better staying with xp if you refuse or can't upgrade to software that's only a few years old. BTW the priceis for upgrade only you have to be running windows already if not you pay full price

The Windows 7 upgrade is a clean install with XP PC's. I use Windows 7 RC on my Mac and it works great.

I'm running the Win7 RC- about the only negative I can see is it takes a lot of drive space. Other than that- it seems as fast as XP.
That said- I would probably just buy a new computer rather than upgrade one built for XP.

This is pre-order. You order now at a savings and then it will ship around Oct 22 when it is released. The Microsoft Store also has full versions available but no discount. If you have a copy of Vista or XP you can use the upgrade version but if running XP you need to do a clean install, while Vista can be upgraded. If you do not have Vista or XP then you would need the Full version. I have been running the Windows 7 RC 32 version on my old PC and it doesn't like is my Video card which is very old. It runs OK but I loose the Areo feature. It also doesn't like my old Raid controller. I am building a new PC and then I will load XP and Windows 7 RC 64 and then load all my software and see what may need upgrading.

I am sure that my several years old laptops with XP would have several issues with Windows 7 and these would far outweigh the benefits. I would be glad if Windows 7 is a better OS than Vista when I do buy a new, or in my case used from eBay, laptop.
