Maybe I spent too much time SOB or maybe I'm dreaming of the return. Today I turned on my left turn blinker to tell the guy behind me that he could pass (2 lane road an we were in the MH). Took me 15 seconds or so to realize that I was confusing my fellow North Carolinian. I've also been known to drive on the paved shoulder until DW reminded me.

I've done the same thing with the left turn sig. However, here in Texas on a two lane road driving on the paved shoulder is commonplace

There are so many times I want to use my left turn signal to let the person behind me he know can pass. How can we get all Gringos to understand what the signal means ?

I have come to almost a complete stop and waved out the window for a group to pass as wanted to let them go ahead and drive without my holding them up only to recieve the finger from one irrate moron that couldn't figure it out. I was on a isolated and curvy road and this was the first straightaway in miles.
Or how about being trapped in the right lane on a freeway only to have a moron pace my truck from the enterance ramp. I would slow down to let them in and they would slow, we did this only to have them come to a stop on the ramp and almost get rearended by another irrate individual.

Going from Durango to Mazatlan on time we about got destoyed with the ole clear to pass signal. We had been following a truck which went faster than us on the flats and lugged going uphill. Starting up a hill which was clear, put on our blinkers and he put his left blinker on and I smartly started to pass only to discover he was taking our lane and was going to run us off the road. Fortunately, since it was uphill, I dogged the brakes and got behind him. There was a vehicle on the side of the road taking mast of the lane which was blocked from my view by the truck!
Still it would be handy to let the folks behind know that they were clear to pass.

I was taught that a left turn signial means that you are going to turn left or change lanes. No way would I pass you with your left turn signal on.

The Only place I have ever found that used the Left Signal to advise it is OK to Pass is Mexico! They also Use Their 4 Way or Flashers to advise of Road Hazards Ahead!

I've also tried to signal vehicles to pass, by turning left signal on twice, OFF, then twice again - at the same time I'm hugging right edge of road. Very rarely do they get it, they'll just go ahead and pass on a curve.

Belgique. Guess we may all need a lesson in road etiquette. No way will I pass someone on the left with their left turn signal "on" That means, to me, that they are either turning left or switching to a left lane. I have driven a lot in Texas where it is common (although illegal, I think) to pull onto a paved shoulder so faster vehicles can pass me in the traffic lane. Seems to me everyone used a "right" turn blinker to herald this event and then a "left" turn signal to pull back into traffic. I do the same when traveling 2 lane highways in other states and I am slowing down for back-ups to pass.

Guess I didnt know the left turn signal was intended for other than turn left, my suggestion to get someone to pass you is pull as far to the right and while slowing use your emergency flashers which would be safer and not confusing, gee,,,, in 34 years of Law Enforcement guess I lived a sheltered life, never hearing this technique. I've worked alot of serious accidents during my career caused by second guessing the other driver's intentions and believe me I'd never pass you to the left if you were to use the left signal and in Michigan would OC88 " Driver Improvement Evaluation" the driver! Sorry.
