We never have needed an adapter and used our extension cord once - at the same place where they conveniently sold them for a great deal more than $10. We had to have it there, so we bought it. Sad but true.

May the road rise with you, the wind be always at your back.
We carry the attached 30' 50 amp cord, have an add'l 30' 50 amp cord, then have two 30' 30 amp cords and a 100' 20 amp cord. Two weekends ago even all that wasn't enough! Would have needed at least 300' to get to the plugins. Will never go to that show again!

Yes on adapter. Yes we have stayed at sites where choice was 50 amp or 20 amp. Also stayed at many sites where 30 amp socket was burned or broken to we used the adapter and the 50 amp socket.
We carry TWO spare 30 amp extension cords. Rarely use both, but fairly often use one (plus the normal attached cord).
Note the more rural the CG, the more likely you are to need the extension.

They are both good to have. As someone else sad they don't take up much storage space. If you wait till you actually know you need the cord or adapter it maybe too late to actually purchase one. Prior planning prevents poor performance or something like that!
Don't stay at KOAs very often, but the last one was .. rude ... about my power cord only 20' and wasn't the 35' they consider normal. Luckily we moved to a much better spot.
If you go to a North Dakota Park plan on at least 50' to the post. Often a power pedestal is shared between 2 sites.
I now carry a 12 ga extension cord. The camper has the standard 30 amp plug, but we can easily survive on a 15 amp hook up.
Adapters? I carry 3 plus my heavy extension cord.
