Just got off the phone with a campsite here in Southern Alberta.

They have a $10 non-refundable booking fee. Fine, I've seen a couple of those, though so far that is the highest I've seen.

I wanted a full service site, but all they have is water and electric (20 amp) for $35 a night.

$45 for one night seems a bit high, but it's the perfect location for stopping (we're just passing through for the night) so I say go for it.

Then she explains that it's $10 to use their dump station.

Wait. What? Even staying there?

Yes, she replies. They do have full service sites (not for the night I need) and those are more expensive.

How much are the full service sites? I ask.

$40 a night.

So for the privilege of having to drive to the dump station, wait in line, get out of the vehicle to hook up and dump... I get to pay an extra $10.

$55 a night for a site I don't have sewer or A/C seems a bit much.

I was shocked.. I was appalled.

I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks this is ridiculous.

Anyone else run into something like this? Am I just a cheap guy who's gotten lucky with the sites I've stayed at?

We've stayed at a bunch of places just passing through for the night and have never had, nor have I ever heard of such a thing as paying to use the dump station after paying for a night!

I've got to say I've never heard of charging for dumping when you are a paying guest. I don't think you're cheap, I think charging more for a site where you have to dump than a full hook-up is crazy. Are you sure the booking fee doesn't come off the price of the site? Most booking fee's are just to cover some cost if you don't show, if you show up the fee should come off the site fee.

I think your math is off, you're only paying $45 for the site and "dump fee". And if they charge the $10 non-refundable booking fee on the full hook-up site, that's $50.
And I don't get the no A/C comment, the site has electricity so I hope it's enough to run the A/C.

When you run into questional business tactics, the best way to complain is to say: "Thanks, but no thanks." and do not stop there. The campground will soon change hands when no one wants to do business with them.

Your not cheap.
I think that CG must have gotten their calculations from one of those "$0.25 ea. / 3 for $1.00" sales people.

Did you point out to her that it was cheaper for the site with the hook up?

It's a world of crazy people.....this is why God created Walmart for those one night stops!! Why a CG would charge so much for an over-nighter, other than to discourage it, is beyond me. Guess times are good at that place!!

happy Camping

$35 for the site
$10 booking fee
$10 dump fee
=
$55

I actually stopped her and ran through those numbers and asked if I was really expected to pay $55 for the site. She stopped, checked her math, and replied that yes, that was exactly how much it would be, plus 5% gst.

I thought about asking if I could just pay the $40 for the full service site, but I decided that $50 ($40site + $10 booking fee) was still too high, especially since I was already annoyed at the whole paying for the dump station thing.

I told her that I was surprised they would charge for dumping when I had already paid for the night and she said "Well, that's our policy."

I guess their business is so good they don't care about attracting more guests. I won't stay with em.

I'm tempted to post their name, but I'd rather not upset anyone.

Edit:

Forgot to mention. In regards to the service, it's only 20AMP. I've been told by some people that 20 amp is plenty to run an AC. But I've also seen people talk about how 30amp isn't enough if it's hot enough.

She told me that the campground couldn't support A/C. Even in Canada, July days can be pretty hot.

Please post the name and phone number of the site. These rip off artists should be advertised. They get enough complaints perhaps it would stop.
