Hi all,

Question about greasing axle bearings.

The axle on my 2 year old jayco tent trailer has grease nipple under the dust cap. Is it sufficient to just use a grease gun on the nipple? Or do I still need to take things apart and grease the bearings manually?

If I had to guess I have about 3,500km on it.

Thanks.

Personally I don't like using the zerk fittings on the axle. I believe, after many years repacking bearings on cars, trucks, and trailers that you need to clean and inspect bearings before repacking. Using those zerk fittings on the axle just pumps excessive grease into the cavity in the hub and doesn't do anything to clean out dirt, debrie and any metal that maybe in there from a bearing failure. More work but in the long run, IMHO, worth taking every thing apart and doingit manualy, which reminds me, both of mine are over due.

I guess it is OK on an axle that does not have brakes. But one really needs to repack wheel bearings every year. And if you do that you should not need to worry about the bearings at all between packings.

No way you should touch those zerks if you have brakes on the axle.

Yep, I've got brakes. I guess I'll take things apart tomorrow. I trust things should come apart the same way even with the zerk fitting?

I am again odd man out. When we had Dexter Ez-Lube axles, which sounds like what you have, I gave them a few SLOW pumps with a HAND (do not use air gun) grease gun before each major trip. I also took apart ONE wheel every other year to grease by hand and check brakes. Worked great for over 30,000 miles, then we traded "up" to a TT without that nice feature. Never got a drop of grease on brakes.

Hi, I did four wheel bearings a few weeks ago . I rested the grease gun on my leg , turned the wheel while I was pumping slowly. 35 minutes, get the correct grease of of Dexters web site

I use the zerk fittings on my Jayco. I wouldn't keep a trailer if I had to grease the bearings every year.

And I wouldn't tow a trailer that I didn't tear down and check the bearings and brakes every year or two.
