We are contemplating purchasing tracFones and were wondering about the coverage area. I know there are good spots and bad spots through out the country. We are in North centeral Illinois at the moment and will be in southern Arizona and southeast Texas through the winter months. Does anybody use tracFone in these area's? If so please let me know if you have any problems or if they will work ok.
Thanks,
Nels & Betty

I use Tracfone all over Texas. Also used it in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.

have not had a problem with mine.Used all over from Southern Cal,Arkansas,Alaska just to name a few.Funny thing in Alaska it would only work in the water on the Kenia River..so I had to Call when I was fishing....I probably needed a special fishing license for that up there lol.

Tracfone uses AT&T towers the last I heard. Coverage should be as good as any other service.

That may well be the case and I don't know anything about Tracfone but I have a regular contract AT&T phone and my wife has an AT&T GoPhone (pay as you go) and the GoPhone has a more limited coverage area -- both in actual practice and in the different coverage maps that AT&T supplies. Only mentioning this to note that even if they use AT&T towers they may or may not have the same coverage.

TracFone has no network. They contract with networks like AT&T/SBC, U.S Cellular et al to provide the most extensive coverage they can. But they use more than one technology, so if you have a GSM TracFone may not work so well where the only TracFone carrier is CDMA, and vice versa.

I've found that my GSM TracFone works well in places where my AT&T GSM phone has no towers, so TracFone must be contracting with someone else. There are local GSM carriers, not all the network belongs to T-Mobile and AT&T.

Before TracFone went GSM locally, my TracFone was TDMA/Analog, contracting with "whoever" in any local. My TracFone worked in places where my SBC TDMA/analog phone did not work; i.e. TracFone had better provider arrangements than SBC had roaming arrangements.

I continue to carry a GSM TracFone as backup to my primary (AT&T) mobile, to cover the places where the primary has no network.

TracFone uses AT&T where TracFone uses AT&T. Where AT&T is not licensed to do business, TracFone uses somebody else. Anybody else.
