Here we go. Driving up I5 from LA to Tracy Ca in a big time crosswind. My awning on the the driver's side blow's up then retracts. Bout had a heart attack. It happened about 3 or 4 times and by the time I got off at my exit shoot I was only going about 45 or so on the freeway. I did pull over each time open the pop out, bring it back in making sure that it wasn't folding up in a awkward way. Do they sell locks if they do I haven't seen them before. Any advice other than telling me to stay off I5 would be great. Thanks Darren

Yes, they sell locks. You need to identify the brand and style of your awnings and get the right locks. My A&E awning and slide toppers have great locks, and I've never had any billowing. They stay right where they belong. When I replaced my slide toppers (damaged by age and hail) I was careful to align the locks so they worked properly.

Camping World sells locks that are plastic "chainlinks" (thicker & sturdier than it sounds) - one clamp fastens to the roof and the other to the camper wall under the camper. The "chains" can be attached & detached by an awning wand, which you can buy there as well, or at almost any RV dealer. There are other styles of locks too, depending on what kind of awning you have; the kind I mention here will work for both manual and power awnings and works very well. The "chain" encircles the awning when rolled up & prevents this very occurrence.

An awning or a slide topper? If an awning then I would add the locks. FYI - we had that type of problem on our slide topper (long one on drivers side) and it went away once it was retensioned.

For a POSITIVE lock on the awning, go to awninglock.info. Have used it for years and always feel confident

Sounds like you hit the Altamount Pass, did you see Windmills. Anyways, ducktape believe it or not will work well, once wrapped around a few times on your awning catches.

I'm am testing a cheap fix of my own while I think about the different locking devices. Who knows-maybe I'll not need anything else.
I cut a red 10.5 oz plastic coffee container in half. Cut notches in bottom for roller shaft and latch. Just right size to bungee/clamp over end of tube and front end of rolled up awning with edges of each half on top and bottom where awning attaches to trailer.
Theory being air can't get into awning layers to cause problems.
