Thinking of camping in Colorado the week after Labor day holiday. I want to visit Durangon and Estes Park area, A few of the choice State parks in the mountains too. Wondering what the snow chances are? I would be going for 2 weeks.
Any natives have an opinion on the snow chances? I will be pulling a 5th wheel with a 2wd truck.
If the general opinion is "too big of chance of snow", Plan B would be Take a trip to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. I doubt it would snow in Tennessee in Early September.
Chances of snow? Possible
Chances of snow that would cause a problem? Very slim
Snow that time of year can be beautiful. Usually followed by T-shirt weather with cobalt blue skies. I have lived at 9000 ft. elevation for 10 years, and have seen snow only once in early Sept.

There is a chance of snow anytime in the summer at high altitudes. I have lived in Colorado for 76 years and have seen snow many times. One Forth of July I saw 8 inches at 11,000 ft. One Labor Day we had 20 inches west of Denver and about 10 in Denver.
Don't worry about it, it melts fast.

They have given you the facts --
I have traveled extensively in Colorado over the past 4 years and my recommendation would be GO! Best time of the year -- if you are LUCKY you might catch a dusting, but only that and only if you are really LUCKY.
I have traveled all winter and as a rule very little snow until November and then if you as the locals not enough.
Durango will be great -- Ouray and Silverton will be spectacular -- Redstone, Marble and Maroon Bells are a Don't miss.
When you finish with the Rockies then you can head back to the Smokies for a little Color.
BOL,
P.S. The best trip I've ever taken to Yellowstone was in the last week of October and the First week of November -- yes they had had some snow but not enough to even have a second thought about.

In the years we lived in Estes we used to figure one snowfall in Sept - usually mid to late. Sept is probably our favorite time to be in Rocky Mtn NP. You MIGHT get some snow that early but it would be rare and, like said, melts very quickly.

Absolutely, you have just got to see the Colorado Rockies in the fall. Sure, I have been snowed on every month of the year in CO, but not enough to cause problems during that time. Sure you might get a dusting, or have to turn on windshield wipers because of snow over a pass, but you cannot beat the scenery, and if time is right, the color change of the aspens ranks right up there with the Northeast hardwood forests.
I'd say it might be pretty likely this year, northern colorado has had a very wet, mild late spring-early summer this year. I was just there for a wedding and it rained nearly every day we were there, going back in August.
Doubtful the snow would give you any troubles though, now in January that might be a bit different.

Thank you for the input guys, I will plan on going to Colorado. I have a Hankering to Ride the Steam train at Durango again, been years since I've been out there. Also the State parks in the Mountains are beautiful it seems according to the SP website.
