Just a quick question about regular genny's and inverter style. I already know the inverter style are the quietest and the most camper friendly.
My question is it safe to use regular style generators with todays newer trailers. Because the regular gennys aren't a clean power like the inverter style, has anyone had problems with frying any of the electronics in the newer trailers(such as the fridge). I am just curious becaus the fridges have to have some sort of electronic to be able to decide between propane and power when in auto mode.
Thanks for any input you may have. As much as I would like a 3000watt inverter genny, it is just not in the budget right now. And as for the comments on regular ones being loud, I know they are louder.

The Champion is a little louder than the inverter ginnys but still below the park service maximum. The inverter ginnys are only super quiet when hardly powering anything, put full load on them and they are not so quiet.

Thanks for the couple posts so far, and any more that are to come.
The generators I have been looking at are the champion 4000/3500 and the Hyundai 3250. Any one have any comments on the Hyundai generator.

Think of it this way. If you are boon docking and require a generator, turn the refer to gas only, same for the HW heater. That way there is less drain on the generator. Using a generator to run the AC only why, unless you have two AC units, do you need a generator larger than 3000 watts? Simple answer is you don't. so if you are buying right now today, do yourself and other campers a big favor and shop online for the Honda or Yamaha Inverter types. They are so much quieter and have cleaner outputs the small price difference is well worth it.

I had the opportunity to see the numbers on a db meter that was being used by a park ranger checking a 6500w Champion a week ago. It was lightly loaded and at 21' it registered 82 db. Don't anybody try and convince me they are "just a little" noisier than the Honda or Yamaha inverter type. The owner was told to shut it off. His buddy had a Honda construction type 5000w in the back of his pickup and it was 75 db at 21'. Still way loud. You could hear it all over the park. The ranger told him he should not let it run either but he let them use it with the warning to not run it any more than absolutely necessary and don't bring it back.

we have an older 91 class c. our generator is an onan 6.5 and although it runs, it concerns me. I like the new Honda Inverter units but with gas tanks set ups in their package, etc. they are NOT units that can be thrown into the same space.
Is there a discussion here on replaceing older style Onans etc. with newer/quieter Honda units?
Is there recommendations on rebuilding the older Onans?
thanks!! ron

Power from a non inverter generator is generally a clean sine wave. But they must run full rpm (loud) and are generally open frame (also loud). You cannot just put some muffler on it either as it is the mechanical noise through the case that causes much of the noise. You can pay a little more now for quiet or you can pay a lot for it later in tolerating the noise. Look for 60 dB rating or less.

We recently picked up a new Onan/Cummins gas generator...when dad told me what it cost, I told him he was crazy, as we'd been borrowing an el-cheapo generator and I thought there'd hardly be a difference noise wise...boy was I wrong. The Onan/Cummins unit is QUIET...under full load you can literally hold a normal conversation standing next to it...we've gotten more compliments on that generator than the trailer or the car inside the trailer! Folks are just that darn impressed with it...
