What are the Pros and Cons of having a home base in Tennessee, when we go FT? Taxes ect. ect.?
We are just a few short years away from FTing and DW wants to get just a small place,so when we have to come off the road, we'll have a place already. As for me, I'd rather not have NOTHIN to be concerned with except our FT rig. IF??? need be to come off road, give me a spot to park the rig, and I would be HOME But we are not on a one way street and WE want each other to be happy, so we both know their will be compromises. So if we do opt. for a small affordable place in Tn., I know we will have property taxes, real estate and per square footage of house, but these taxes are not excessive in our area.
We do not have a state income tax, but do have a high sales tax. Re-newable registrations on vehicles are around $30.00 each per year.
What am I missing? And free advice is always welcome.
Thanks,
Steve

All I can tell you is I stopped in Tennessee to stock up on staples and a few items for the MH while traveling to Florida.
By the end of a few shopping stops I'd spent 100.00 in TAXES!
IMHO I find 10% sales tax a bit over the top. I WAS going to look at property there but passed after one day of shopping. That added cost of 10% on purchases is pretty much a daily function in one's life. I think you have to weigh the 'total' costs of each item in each state.
The states that might charge higher vehicle registrations or impact fees when moving there is at least only a 'once a year' cost. I couldn't fathom paying that high a tax for normal purchases on a daily basis. JMHO.
We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Using your figures you must have spent $1000 while in the State. Thanks!!!!

TN or even KY are good landing pad locations to head out in about any direction.

It's good for us, only 2% more in sales tax than where we lived in GA, and no ad valorem tax or income tax, except some interest income. We are only in TN 4 months each year.

I agree Tn. sales tax is a killer, but when we can start full timing, we will be in TN. very little. Hope to follow that 70* mark as much as possible.
Thanks,

In TN you pay no income tax on earned income, but you DO owe on interest/dividends once they pass a certain level. If you are living off investments, check the TN State website and figure out your tax rate. IMHO, I would go for east TN. West TN gets hot in the summer, and middle TN gets ice about once a year, but East TN doesn't get as hot or cold as the rest of the state. And it's prettier. And the food tastes better. And the fly fishing is excellent.

Just remember that in TN in order to renew your car registration you need to get your vehicle inspected, so you will need to keep that in mind if you plan on being on the road for 8 months of the year. You wouldn't want to have to drive all the way back to Tn just to get your vehicle inspected.

In KY they prefer you to renew your tags by mail even if you live around the block so you are not in their face.
