I thought I was pretty much up to date on technology but find myself lost once again.

I have recently purchased a couple of electric hand tools. Both of them have a module of some sort clamped around the power cord. The things are about 2 1/2 inches long by 3/4 inch in diameter and are stamped "Do Not Remove".

What are they, and what happens if I remove them?

I think they are to prevent shoplifting. I had one on a saw and after a year or so, and asking everyone I could think of, I pryed mine off. Inside is a bar code tag. If this same code isn't scanned into the computer ( when the clerk scans the item for payment ) It will activate the alarm when leaving the store.

Most likely jdgreen42 is correct and it is just an anti-theft device. Any type of EMF choke would be molded into the cord, so it would be impossible to remove.

Probably an anti-theft device. An EMF choke is usually heavy, and lbigger in diameter. What kind of store did you buy them in??

The OP here. Thanks for the opinions. After considering them and looking at the thing some more I tend to believe that it is an electronic device with a security or product tracking mission.

I would tend to believe that its the EMF filter... they've become very common on electronics these days. Its probably to protect your TV signal more than anything... You've seen the FCC stickers on these products?? "This device may not emit..." I think its part of this program.
