Have you spent extended time (Oct. – May) in the Big Bend area of Texas? How long, what months, where, and what was the best and worst.
Thanks

I have no info on wintering in Big Bend, but I doubt that many people, if any, do it.
Reason: The closest Wal-Mart is 4 hours away - one way. The closest grocery store of any size will be in Alpine, which is still a good distance from Big Bend. Alpine is not that big of town, the population is under 6,000, so selections will be limited and prices high.
Reason #2: Contrary to popular belief, it gets cold in this region. It is not rare for Big Bend to get snow once or twice a year.
Reason #3: The fuel prices around Big Bend are pretty high - they stations know that they have you, and you are not going to drive 150 miles to save 5 dollars.
It takes a special person to enjoy living in a place so remote.

A month ago we spent a week there and that was enough. It really is isolated.

I may not get another response but, if you haven’t done it, please don’t respond. The question was and is “Have You” not “what is your speculation”. I asked questions I would like answered by the group I directed the question to. .

rreese, I really think the folks who answered were only trying to help. Perhaps you could be a bit more humble and accept the responses as such.

The place to stay in Big Bend is Lajitas Resort$475.00 per month including elec.
Yes, I stayed there a month and about 12 rigs were staying the whole winter and had stayed there many times before. Like having a resort to yourself including club house and pool. They lost their golf course last Sept but were re-building it last winter. Check out their web site.

We spent a LOT of time in BBNP in winters back in the 1990's, and, yes, it can get very cold. But it can also be very warm. Got down to 15 degrees one day in early February and it was sleeting but then it got up to 85 a week later! You have to explore the park to appreciate its variety and beauty. If you're into birding, BBNP is the place and winter is the best time. Since you can't stay in the park all winter, you probably will have to alternate your visits with private accommodations nearby.
With 'global warming', you probably won't have those cold spells any more!

One of the rangers here in CHNP is a property owner in the BB area and lives there during the "winter" half" of the year. The other half she works in various National Parks.
Talking to her the other night, it's clear she loves the BB area of Tx. Very, remote yes and you need to have an appreciation of that and be self-sufficient to a large extent. Her home is completely off-the-grid, she uses solar and cisterns. She tells me lots of folks live in RV's there during winter season.
I would love to spend the entire "winter" season there, say October-April. The pics I've seen of both the National and State Parks are VERY scenic. I would not want to be there in July though.

hi Ron and Pat,
I put in an email to one of the rangers here who worked at Big Bend NP last winter, he would know exactly how the winters are in that area. I do know that he had an excellent time there and he thinks of it fondly. As soon as I get an email back, I will post what he said.
