I am suppossed to leave tomorrow, and I still can't figure out my socket trouble. I have the signals and tail/markers. I cannot find a wire that is hot all the time nor can I find one that is hot when I step on the brakes. I only have two wires (a black and white) to work with. I think I found that pair which looks like it attaches to the brake controller (a drawtite). The controlller does not light up at any time.

That doesn't help - I already know the positions. I made some progress. I found the brake wire on the tow vehicle. It was the white wire. When I step on the brakes, the brake lights come on, so I assume the brakes are working. I still do not have 12 volt power - I guess the only problem not having 12v is the breakaway, right, as the TT battery is dead................

Just because the brake lights comes on doesn't mean the brakes are working.
Look around the brake controller for an in line fuse.
Follow the wires to the engine compartment. There should be some device to provide power to the trailer to charge. It could be a relay or an isolator. Hopefully there is a fuse or circuit breaker. This could be blown or is not auto resetting circuit breaker.
The black wire maybe the charge wire.

This can't get much worse. My right turn signal is not working. Both the left and rights blink very dimly when I turn on the right. The tow vehicle relay is also not clicking at a steady rate - it acts like there is a short. Guess I am stuck home.

This sounds like you are not getting a good ground between truck and trailer.

Just went out to check that. Ground seems ok at the ends of both connectors - 7:00 at the tow end and joining at the mating tt side.

a quick check of the brakes is hold a compass next to each wheel, below the bearing cap. when the brakes are activated, the compass needle will swing towards the wheel. the next best way is a clampon amp meter on each hot wire going to each individual brake. obviously the compass is a lil faster, but the clampon is the final check.

Sounds like a ground problem to me also.
Try hooking a wire or jumper cables from truck to trailer.

Why would I need this if I have a good ground through the sockets???
