FYI, The EGR is located on the left (drivers) side of the motor right at the top. It sits about 6 inches away from the valve cover, and mid way back from the front. You will see a plug pointing toward the front. Un plug it. Takes all of thirty seconds to do. I wrap mine with a baggie and tywrap. It will give you a CEL and one ding on start up. So what. It also prevents all that hot gas from getting to the turbo and mucking up the innards. If you have to return for dealer service, simply plug it in and go through three start cycles and the CEL is cleared.
Next thing you should do is use the EB all the time. And in town manually downshift to 4 to prevent the engine from lugging. Remember, 5 and 6 and both OD gears and as such will really lug the motor down below about 45 MPH. I like to try and keep my motor humming above 1600 RPM as much as possible. While some people (sorry Mav) will say it does no good, I can see about a 2MPG increase. But like I said before the biggest advantage is the reduction of soot caused by the recirculating exhaust gas in and around the turbo. As I understand it, the dealers will only do about two turbo cleanings ans then it is on your dime.
There are some, as donn0128 states, that see no benefit from deleting the EGR....I am one. I have actually had problems because of it. Low MPGs, hot running engine issues, etc. Also my truck takes 13+ start cycles to clear the EGR CEL. But my OBDII code reader will kill it quick.
I run with brake on and also stay in fifth gear at 55mph usually, up to 60mph. Anything over that and I go to sixth (auto) so far, milage has increased some,2.5+. Going back to Florida tomorrow for a funeral so will be running at 75mph in sixth the whole time with brake on. We shall see what we shall see. Have 10300 on truck so far. Love it!!!!JMHO
Tech said you could overheat the head by unhooking the EGR valve. May have been blowing smoke. I do need to keep the warranty valid tho.

Think for a minute how absurd that comment is?
First the EGR dumps the exhaust gasses into the air intake ahead of the turbo. So for that to be even possible the diesel fuel would have to be hotter than the exhaust gasses. If you look at the plumbing, the EGR is on the left side of the motor and there is a pipe, now at exhaust gas temps running around the motor from the left to the right side to enter the air intake just ahead of the turbo. By blocking, or preventing those hot gasses from entering the fresh air intake what happens? What comprises diesel exhaust gasses? Carbon, unburned fuel, soot. so by introducing that into the fresh air intake what happens? Soot is cooled and plastered all over the insides of your turbo and air intake system. Pretty soon the turbo quits working and you have to make a trip to the dealers for one of their infamous cleaning jobs. Another 50 dollars in the tech's pocket! Cylinder head temps will actually be cooler.
If this was form a diesel tech, I would run as fast as I could from that dealership and never return. He has no clue how a diesel motor works.
I have an 08 with 2200 miles on it and I got a cel at 1800 miles. The code was 2262 which is a sensor in the turbo that senses soot build up. I dont baby my truck and to have soot at at such low mileage I unplugged the EGR as fast as I could. My mileage went up 2 mpg on the overhead the next day and continues to read 17.5 around town when the best I ever did before was 15.5. I am a firm believer that the less soot you put through your motor the longer it will last, and the better it will run.
