OK, i dont want to hear about how you get 900mpg!
I am considering a 2006 F350 diesel crew cab 4x4 lariat which i can get for $24k. First i would like to know what to look for in this truck, eventhough it only has 48k miles i have never heard anything good about this motor. Tell me i am wrong and it was another year that had the issues.
I have owned diesel trucks before, dodge with a cummins, so i have an idea of what to expect in performance.

Pretty hard to beat a 5.9 CTD over an International 6.0. Sounds like you've done your research; go with your gut.

Although the problems of the 6.0L dieselwere pretty well cured by 2006, there were still problems. The 6.0L would be at the very bottom of my shopping list.

I would also think judging from what I see around here that you could pick up a lot of trucks for that price. 06 was about the end of the 6.0L run and most people were happy about that fact. Friend has a 6.0L and after riding with him a ways I sure am glad I have a Cummins under my hood. That thing is loud, harsh and not at all comfortable. But that's me.

Our 2006 F350 PSD has been nothing but a pleasure to drive. We now have 47000 miles on the truck and 34000 of those has been pulling our 5th wheel to all four corners of this great country of ours. We started pulling a 5th wheel with a 1995 F250 460 ci gas truck and then a 2000 F350 7.3 diesel and now this truck pulls the easiest and best of the three. I put it in tow-haul and cruise and off we go.

I also have found a really nice 07 F350 dually with the 6.0, only 9k miles and they were trying to put me in that for $30k.
My gut tells me to keep looking for a dodge CTD a year old, but since i need a back seat and 8' bed it has become a very difficult find.

At the end of the day, the motor is warrantied out to 100k. I have an 05 F-250 that has 73k on it and have loved the truck from day one. The only hiccup the motor has had is an o-ring on a high pressure oil line went bad, and that was fixed under the warranty.
That being said, I wouldn't touch an 03/04 6.0. Those were the troublesome years that gave Ford the black eye with that motor. The description given of the motor/truck being loud, harsh and uncomfortable seems more like a description of a Dodge than a Ford, but that's just me...

I would stay away from any truck with a 6.0l engine.

I have a 06 f-250 PSD bone stock with 57,000 miles with about 12,000 towing various fifth wheelers, 27 to 33 ft. I have done nothing but change oil and keep the air and fuel clean. It will cruise towing 11000 lbs at 65 mph with 12 mpg without the temp. gauges moving. I bought mine after watching several friends experience the same good performance.
They can all have problems, one of my customers is Cal. has had to rebuild his 2006 Duramax twice along with his allison transmission. A friend here in Florida who used to be a Dodge dealer commented that the diesels were not what they used to be.
A well maintained 06 powerstroke would not scare me one bit.

Get the VIN number and have someone run a Oasis report to see if the trucks has had many repairs done. If it's been a trouble some truck you'll see many repairs.
