It pays to get the EZ Pass just for the time you save at the booths and it is good in the east in most states.

Make dure if you have a 1 ton you get the correct pass... I accidently took my car pass with my truck and boat (2 axals) over the Verrazano Bridge empty and got a ticket at 4 AM for the wrong pass and had to pay a $70 fine and $26 for the toll .. the real kicker was that they took the pass and I had to pay cash all the way to Fla.... got it back when I paid the fine...Ain't NY a great place ?

This answers the question I was going to ask. I have had an ezpass since they came out. Its linked to car car long gone. I use the same one for everything I drive ,including the TC on a F350. Havnt been caught yet, but sounds like in the wrong time and place I'de have a problem. Im not paying 26 bucks to cross that damn bridge so I'll keep my fingers crossed and keeep using what I have.

If you have a standard NY account (where you prepay by credit card), they will give you another for the truck.

Also they have some kind of discount for motor homes. And will give you one if you frequently haul a trailer.

Get onto I-86 while still in Pa, then at Binghamton, go up I-88. No toll and you get there just as fast. Lots to see along the way!

When I first signed up with EZ-Pass I asked for a trailer towing pass. One thing I can say is that the customer service at NYS EZ-Pass sucks... they just really suck. I tried several times to get the right pass. They kept sending me the blue one for tractor trailer trailers! I tried to explain that it was a TT being pulled by an SUV. None of them I talked to got it. I still have the blue pass around someplace as I gave up on getting the right one and just use the regular one. Never had a problem pulling with it. I even use it frequently to cross over the Canadian border while towing the TT, where it works on their toll bridges.

I had a heck of a time dealing with them myself. Tried for the longest time to get a tag for the motorhome that was on the motorhome discount plan where you pay regular passenger car (low vehicle) rates, not commercial (high vehicle) rates. Finally broke down and went to a walk-in customer service office, left 15 minutes later with my tag.

At the time, they offered to give me a second tag for towing, but I declined since I didn't pull a toad at the time. Without the special tag, if you're towing, you go through a manned lane with your non-towing tag, and they will adjust the axle count and the rate. Did that for a while, and then decided I wanted the second tag for when I'm towing.

Made several phone calls, and finally got them to send me a tag. Made the first trip with it, and it cost $19 instead of the $9 I expected. Turns out the new tag wasn't on the motorhome discount plan like I requested, and like they assured me it would be. Called back, and they said that it's impossible to have a towing tag on the motorhome discount plan, and said that the few seconds I saved by using the towing tag and not stopping at a lane should more than make up for the extra $10 it cost. I don't think so!

Finally gave up with the guys on the phone, and went to the walk-in service center, which I should've done in the first place. I explained that I wanted the tag to be on the motorhome discount plan, and if that wasn't possible I didn't want it. They said the guys on the phone have no idea what they're talking about, and few minutes later I walked out of there with my towing tag updated for the discount plan.

Moral of the story: if you are trying to do anything other than get a standard tag for a standard car, I strongly recommend you go to a walk-in service center (especially the one on Grand Island, NY) rather than deal with the telephone support people or try to do it online.

Just remember.... the EZ Pass folks are 'related' to the ones 'running' the big banks and GM now. How do we think they could also run the health care system??

I have had very little contact with the folks at NY EZ Pass, I did ask them to send me some new strips and I got them. For a motor home and trailer I would think the best bet is to get the application, send it in along with the page (link) I posted. That page has pictures with the codes, so I am guessing they could get it right.

But, I will say after shopping around a few years ago that they (NY Thruway) have the best 'deal' of any I found. As long as you have it tied to a credit card to replenish they will 'give' you up to 4 vehicles worth of passes. Everywhere else charges, usually around $25 for each pass. NY (and possibly MA) has an RV discount. (Thruway Motor Home Discount Plan**: Proof of motor home registration is required to receive the special motor home discount. Motor homes will receive the passenger vehicle rate based on the number of axles on the motor home. Plan Code: (MHM))

They just put it on the Newport/Pell bridge and they gave me two for free because I had them in another location. So now I have 4 of em. Not sure that the NY ones are worth keeping now.

I will say it makes traveling out here in the land of toll roads much easier than it was in the past.

All valid points, and I agree with you. One other reason to get them from NY: If you sign up for electronic statements (they email you monthly with a link, then you can view and print the statement online) then there are no monthly fees. This is unlike other states which charge a monthly fee whether you use the tag or not. (If you get paper statements mailed to you, I think it's $5 a month fee.)

So, if you're going to get one, go to NY, get electronic billing and automatic credit card payments, and there are no fees. In fact, you save a (very) small percentage on each toll charge.

I hear you do not have to be a resident of NY to get an EZ-Pass from NY.

This is for the most part correct or completly correct. The problem with the EZ Pass is simply the weight policy could nab you - when speaking with one of the supervisors at the EZ Pass HUB - you guys with TV and TC that are overloaded could be nabbed in the future.

I went into White Plains EZ Pass.... for HarleyBullet. The min balance is only $25. Were being charged for a dually pulling a 7500 lb boat trailer.

I almost attempted to put the EZ Pass on my TV to save on the extra axle.....but I report to HarleyBullet and he would be simply not happy if he got pulled over.

What weight policy? This is the first I've heard of it.

From what I've seen, the Thruway no longer goes by weight or dual tires, they base tolls strictly on height over the driving axles, and number of axles.

I've heard the Ohio Turnpike has scales at the tool booths, and will turn away vehicles that are over 20,000 pounds per axle. But I've not heard that happening in NY.

Please provide more details. I'm not worried about weight limits, but it might affect others.

I will grab a copy for myself from EZ Pass. But I saw it for myself at EZ Pass. It related more to the Trailer however, The conversation I had with the Supervisor was quite simple. I will download and post on Monday. Not by my laptop over the weekend.
