I'm a single mom with a almost 9 year old daughter. I want to buy a small camper for us. We'll camp mainly at state parks. Need to be able to tow behind my Nissan Xterra. Don't need bathroom, just need kitchen and bed and A/C. Thought about a pop-up or a travel trailer. Can store it in my grandmother's barn. My budget is very limited, need to spend less than $5000.
Can y'all give me suggestions about what I should get for us?
Thanks so much!
Joy and Lily

Sounds like in that price range, you'll be looking for a small used pop-up.

I'd say you should be able to find a nice popup for 5k, but I've been known to be wrong at times. I'd even sell you my 5er for 5k, but I don't think you could pull it.

they do have pop-ups with shower/toilet. Our 1st Jayco was a pop up and it had portable shower with toilet. It was nice to have it, especially in middle of night. When shopping, don't rule bathroom out. Look and price as well.

There are a number of used pop-ups in that range. I am not sure what the weight range is on TV, but you might also look for a Scamp.

Another thing to think about is weight. The XTerra can pull a max of 5000 lbs, so that can limit you as well as price.

What I think may work for you is a teardrop style trailer. They are really making a comeback, but are designed for campers who are going to be outdoors more than indoors.

http://www.tab-rv.com and http://retrotraveler.com/main.html may have some in your price range new. If you can go a little higher, http://www.bigwoodycampers.com/standard.htm has a standard that's a nice starter model.

I did find a restorable 1947 teardrop for sale in California for 1200.00 http://www.teardroptours.com/TDForSale.html. That is a steal, considering what it is going to be worth when restored.

Hope some of this helps, and you end up with something that works perfect for the two of you! Welcome to rv'ing!

Before you buy look at an Aliner. These little beauties can be pulled with almost any small car, have no canvas to get wet or rot and have all the necessities in one neat little package. Except maybe the toilet. But a porta pot can be used.

Check Memphis Craigslist, took a couple of minutes and found these:
2005 Jayco Pop up with A/C $4500
96 Jayco Pop Up $2750
Thor Light Camper $4700
Starcraft Pop Up $4500
but this one looks perfect if it's still available:

Good luck and Welcome to the forums!!

I would stay with a popup. A V6 engine doesn't do to well pulling a full frontal trailer. Popup, or HTT would be my advise.
