I have been using AVG for several years now and it is fantastic...
I had researched the internet for information on which program to use after having so many problems with both Norton and McAfee over the years..
Every where I looked I found that "AVG"... was rated as the number #1 best anti-virus program on the market according to the experts who research, test and publish their findings in several computer/technical publications.
On the other hand, these same testers all agreed that NORTON and McAFEE were at the bottom of the list for numerous reasons..
Based on the information I found in my search ...
I inserted the factory recovery disc into my computer and did a complete 100% hard drive re-formatting....
taking it back to the day it came out of the box brand new..
After the re-format, the very first thing I did after re-booting was go to the "Control Panel" and delete from my hard drive, anything and everything related to "AOL", and "Norton" ..( those "Free Trial" programs)..
Then I went online and downloaded / installed AVG.....
What a fantastic and refreshing experience after I rebooted and started using the computer again..
It ran five times faster, it no longer had any bad interactions or reactions with the other program on the computer.
Plus, the other programs seemed to work faster and more smoothly than ever before..
Based on that experience, I once again followed the advice of the computer experts and downloaded a couple of other FREE programs to boost my computer security..
"Ad Aware" by Lavasoft is a program that checks for spy-bots and other bad cookies and deletes them.
"Spy-Bot Search and Destroy" does a very deep scan of the hard drive, searching for any type of "Malware".
ALL of these programs are totally FREE from the internet and all of them work together to provide peace of mind for me..
So YES... I highly recommend going with "AVG" for your anti-virus protection.
PLUS... there is another FREE program that is worth it's weight in gold..
What makes Mail Washer so great is that it will allow you to look at all of your emails while they are still on your ISP's computer... BEFORE THEY GET TO YOUR COMPUTER.
Think of it like this... you have a post office box where you normally get your mail ..
You go to the post office ... BUT... before opening your PO Box ...
You walk into the back room of the post office and look at all of the letters addressed to you .. before the mailman puts them into your little PO.box..
and if you see a letter that you don't want ... you simply tell the mailman to throw it away and not put it in your mailbox.
Now when you go back out front and open your PO.box, you only get the letters that you wanted..
This is great protection for your computer.. because you can stop unknown and possibly dangerous emails getting into your computer..
Best wishes on whatever you decide,

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved. The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

Of course, you won't know this until you load another program that DOES detect them, or your machine starts to have issues.....The full (paid for ) version is fine, as is Norton Internet Security 2009 (which by the way has a tiny footprint in resource use...a huge change from previous year's products). Kaspersky also makes a very solid and reliable product.
You DO get what you pay for in this type of product. If you are doing banking or have any personal data on your computer, I would not want it protected with a 'free' program.
We had Macafee on two new machines and they got the sniffles so I went to the tried & proven AVG free and couldn't believe what it found & repaired or healed. The Macafee was a paid model so price doesn't necessarily indicate what you get IMHO

I use AVG on Peggy's computer, and Avast on my computer and the laptop. I have no idea how well they work as we've never had a virus. They don't cause crashes, and seem to have a fairly small footprint, so I'm a happy camper.
I bought it (7.5) almost 2 years ago and was very pleased. When the new version came out about a year ago, AVG wanted me to pay (again) for the 8.5 (or was that 8.0?- LOL!). I kept 7.5 even though it started having problems- "forgetting" updates and other silliness. In May AVG chose to dishonor their agreement and stop supporting version 7.5. They did allow me to down load 8.5.
What a joke. Version 7.5 scanned in about 2 hours or less. The new 8.5 takes over 4 1/2 hours AND uses a lot more rescources. More than half the time it crashed the computer. Its so bad I started turning the auto scans off when they start. Oh, I don't and won't leave my laptop turned on all night even if I thought it might actually complete a scan. All in all the pay version is a rip off- pretty much unusable on my XP machine. I do hope that at least the real time anti virus in working
So I've been following the last few antivirus threads to find a replacement for AVG. I don't mind paying. I do want a "real time" scanner and... well, I want what AVG used to be- neat, lean and actually works. I do not want a crash prone rescource hog like 8.5.
Anyway save your money. Avg free maybe, I had good luck with it. But the pay version is a dog.
I've had Avast for a week or so,and did the research on Google, almost went with a Russian anti spy ware/virus program------most of my problems on my laptop were caused by Microsoft developer programs IE7 beta, chrome, deleted those browsers and installed SeaMonkey and AVAST and the www is a wonderful place to play again
I have used F-Prot for a few years now. It is real good, uses very few resources, updates go very smooth and easy, and it only cost $29, but here is the real kicker...you can install on 5 PC's for that $29. I have three computers, a desktop and two laptops, so $29 is a real deal for a good program.
Started out today-opened my browser(Sea Monkey) and Avast came up with "nuclear" alert warning -------found a Trojan Worm from a downloaded program -add on -to Sea Monkey (Mozilla-add-on) ,a RSS News Feed.I Love this anti spy ware program----it even talks to me when it updates--everyday,Caught and confined the program to a file that Windows or my computer could not use, then sent it to be scanned and confirmed-now have full use of Mozilla add on without the warning----The first anti -virus program I've ever used that runs in "Real-Time"
