Fireworks is what was going on and what kind set the roof on fire is not important as the fact that it happened. A stupid kid laid a bottle rocket on top of my motor home several years ago that had a rubber roof. It burned a hole in it. My office roof in Kansas City was also set on fire with fireworks. Leave fireworks to the professionals.

I've got a better idea, lets provide lower insurance rates for all factories (and all buildings for that matter)constructed with non-flammable roofs. I have an asbestos roof on my house. What is yours made out of?

Why? How many building fires start on the roof? It is something freak like a military flare that caused a problem.

When you have to replace that roof I bet you won't be happy with the choice of shingles. I can tear my asphalt shingles off, throw them in a dumpster and send them to a landfill. Depending on the condition of yours it could be a really expensive proposition.

I guess it depends on where you live. In California wild fire country, where I used to live, many homes could be saved each year if they had non-flammable roofs.

My dad built this house 45 yrs ago - long before the dangers of breathing asbestos fibers was generally known. I had the roof inspected after Hurricane Katrina. One shingle was replaced where a tree limb hit it. The roofer said it looked brand new - better than many new roofs he's been on recently, and to have it reinspected in another 20-30 years. Yes, it will be expensive to replace, but thankfully, it won't need to be done in my lifetime.

Back then, everything was over engineered, not built to minimum specs like most homes are today. My dad built this house to live in till he died (which he did at age 90), not to resell for a profit. The studs, rafters and ceiling joists are all made out of cypress that he cut off the property, and are on 12" centers. 3/4" marine grade plywood is the roof's under-layment. Everything is screwed or bolted together, not nailed. I'm sure this house will be here when I'm long gone.

Look....A paraflare caused the fire - NOT fireworks. Paraflares are not "fireworks". Yes they're a pyrotechnic, but that's where the similarity ends. Paraflares can burn a long time even after they alight and with high intensity. Fireworks normally do not.

That said, fireworks can be dangerous.

Simple bottle rockets, sparklers -FIREWORKS- have been starting
roof fires for years!

Yes - often (like the sparklers) they are used improperly.

CA cities got smart long ago and banned wood shingle roofs - but there are still plenty around.

Many cities also got smart and banned "individual" fireworks too.

Wrong.
Lot of upscale homes spend big money to put cedar shingles on them.
New technology makes them fire retardant.
To my knowledge it is the tar (and gravel) roof that is the biggest fire danger.

And so can driving a car be dangerous. Blaming the fireworks is like blaming automobiles for traffic deaths. Guns dont kill people, people kill people.

To keep the comparison in right perspective, you should talk about civilians being allowed to drive tanks on the highways.
......with no training.
