WE are going to camp in central florida for a month during Thasnksgiving to see if enjoy the area and return after Christmas for a couple of months if Thanksgivg works out OK. WE want to see if we can be real snow birds. We have only camped for a week long outing during our working years but we retired this year.
Your going to like it but come winter if you want warm weather get below the lake, north Florida can be cold , so while there would look down in that area,
Welcome. Please be very careful of the gators and snakes.I came off my 5er steps the other day and stepped on a 5 foot moccasin.I scared the venom out of him and he left.I went swimming after that and a gator grabbed my arm.Thank goodness he was only a 4 footer or I would have been in trouble.Welcome to the sunny state of Florida.

Very funny, 352! After seven snowbird seasons in sunny, southern Florida, we have seen just a couple of 'good guy' snakes (thankfully!), and by looking hard, seen a dozen or so 'gators'. We know they're out there, so are very careful around rivers, creeks etc. Do watch out for your pets! We once saw a gator 'drawn' to just the sound of a yappy, little dog..which was up on a dock, safely out of reach and was taken away anyway, before the rather small 'gator' cruised up. Gators are masters at 'lurking' in the shallows, so take no chances. I also had occasion to see how their slow submersions don't create tell-tale ripples. Spooky! O.K. Now I'VE scared Happy Jim! (And myself?) Nevermind. We're eagerly looking forward to our eighth season down there in our 'second home'.
What's not to like? 70 degrees in January can agree with one. Be sure to be able to watch the weather news about your home area to make you feel even better.
Mail delivery is a problem but there are various ways solve it. Maybe searching this Forum for `mail delivery' will provide some answers.
We only stay in Florida (from Chicago) for a month in January and pay our neighbor to collect our mail and open any window envelopes to let us know via email what bills are due.

We have lived in Florida for 35 years. I may have seen one poisonous snake in all that time. While I have seen many gators while kayaking, I have never had even a remotely close encounter. Gators are not savage man eaters. Like any animal they will defind their territory when cornered or provoked. Come to sunny Florida and have a great time. No worries!!
I disagree with needing to be south of the lake to get warm weather. I might agree w/ south of Orlando maybe in January, but central Florida is fine for the bulk of the winter.
We're just south of Tampa and our weather suits us to a tee. January can be cool - that I don't dispute - but as someone said, check the temps at home and be happy. One of our friends down there likes to say that you don't have to shovel sun
I wouldn't necessarily spend your first winter down there in one spot. There are lots of campgrounds and each one speaks differently to each person. Since you have the luxury to move around, I'd explore a little first and stay at several places.
Enjoy!

May the road rise with you, the wind be always at your back.
We like the central Florida area, around Sebring. We had a couple cool nights, but warmed up pretty fast. We did try futher north (Wintergarden) found that area much colder, could have just been one of those years. I would suggest checking www.rvparkreviews.com, that is a pretty good source to help find a nice place to stay.

Ain't it the truth, in AZ we only keep an eye out for rattlesnakes.
