DW has a White GMT E- Series (about 7 years old). She tried using it often for the first year, looking for gold in CO and MT. I got tired of digging up junk (shot, casings, pull tabs, bottle tops, etc.). When I quit digging, she quit using it. She threatens occasionally, but we haven't been any place promising.
I think the key is taking lessons from the mfr to learn how to use it properly. Better detectors should be able to differentiate between steel or aluminum and gold, but the user needs to know what the subtle signal/tone differences are telling you. The way you move the detector seems to make a difference - sometimes you sweep it, other times you pump it vertically.
Fortunately, it wasn't terribly expensive (around $500 as I recall), and she enjoys it on rare occasion.

I had a White, it worked fine, it died years ago and I found a good used Garrett and it works fine. I enjoy using it when I am in a good location. May I suggest looking in pawn shops for a good used detector. The White that I had cost around $500. new and the Garrett I have now also was in the area of $500. when it was new. I paid $100. for each one of them at a pawn shop and they work perfectly. Why buy new? JMHO

Give Reilly's Treasured Gold a look. They have several packages available. If standard off the shelf detectors don't do it for you they can build custom detectors.
They build on site quality scoops and sell them to most of the dealers that sell on the internet.
Kevin Reilly was a friend and passed away this past April. His shop is the best for treasure Hunters in South Florida and continues in the hands of family members.
I have two fishers, one is a gold detector and one is a CZ5. I use them every now and then. mostly at the coast looking for rings and coins. the gold detector I use in the mountains.
I use a Bounty Hunter, which is NOT top of the line but not an entry level either. It is good enough to use for coins or gold and cost $400. Yes, they are just like RV's, start out with one and then upgrade very shortly, if you like the sport.

I asked for and received my White's Coin MasterIV when I graduated from High School(Circa 1972)...hehe lol I drove my parents to Sweethome, Oregon(the factory) and it was purchased there. It still works to this day, although it doesnt see much use. I returned to White's Sweethome factory a few years back....still looks pretty much the same except the new technology is like night and day. Good Luck....
