You guys need to get a grip, without the fancy accounting and excluding the debt they reduced, Ford still lost millions this quarter, as did every other automaker. Good cars or not, if they can't sell more cars then they currently are, they will be in the same boat as everybody else.

What cogent analysis. Must be a Chevy owner.
"Fancy" accounting works both ways. There was a heap load of special charges last year that accounted for the $8.7b loss...why shouldn't it work the other way also. Either way net is that their loss, excluding special charges, narrowed significantly. Also, they don't need to necessarily sell more cars as profits are a function of income relative to expenses. There are many knobs and dials within those two sides of the equation.

Well I have to agree, don't know if GM will make it or not. I have never seen a business that survives when the workers tells them what they will be paided. But now we will see, and I do agree that GM will be told what to build. But if gas goes up the way some people want, tin boxes will be in, if fuel prices stay around $2.50 a gal small cars want sell. As for the Government owning a company, just look at the Postal system, Rail, to name a few. But I still say that Oil is the down fall of GM, (America runs on Oil) if they were still able to sell Big Trucks and Suv's they whould be fine. But for Ford to survive they have to sell Vehicles with lots of options. And there is a Genius at Ford, who ever thought to sell a ton of equity of Ford before the bottom fell out of car and Truck sale. Good Luck Ford. GBY...

carringb wrote: Yeah, accounting rules can be funny. Just keep in mind every other publicly traded automaker uses the same math so their losses don't look as bad.
I never understood how a Company can post a loss but make a profit at the same time. The year before Doehler-Jarvis closed they said they lost something like 13 mil, they said they should have made 34 mil but only made 21 mil so they lost 13 mil. Wounder what would happen if I tried that on my taxes!
It's all according to what spin you put on it. For a loss spin this direction, for a profit spin this tirection until the numbers line up to what you want!
I do believe this is how the economy got to the currant state it is in now!
