I need help. I need to know how to remove a dead body from the side of my property. About a week and a half ago we started to smell this god awful stench. I thought it mught be my trash. (We had spaghetti and crabs the night before). Stuck my head in the can and nope that wasnt it. It covered most of the street. I live on a corner and you could smell it about 2 houses in each direction. It got really bad this past Wednesday. Temps went up. You couldnt even go near my mailbox without gagging. I was looking everywhere. I thought something might have crawled into the storm drain and died.
Well my wife tells me she found the source of the smell and pointed to the woods right behind our mailbox. So I walk in a little and see what appears to be a skull. But it wasnt gross or anything. Just a pure white skull. Then the spine. Again, just white bone. it appeared someone tried to burn whatever it was because the rest of the pile was black. Well not the rest just some of it. I walked in a little further and saw crumpled leaves. Light colored leaves.....this time if year. cant be. closer look and ....oh no. maggots. everywhere! the dead thing was an enormous deer. the head and neck were cleaned down to the bone but everything from the front legs back was covered in 6-8" of maggots. worming and squirming.
That night I dumped 2 bags of lime on the carcas. (Thats what the Sopranos would do)but it still stinks. Lime has been on it for 2 days.
It's not on my property and in a difficult place to dig a hole and bury.
Town wont come and get it because its not in the street. if I found it early enough I would have dragged it out there. There isnt enough left to drag now.
What can I do to make the smell go away. I dont have any loose dirt laying around to cover it. Cant dig hole where it is because of all the thick underbrush.
Someone please help me.

How about covering it with dirt?

Best thing to do now is let the bugs do their thing. You can sprinkle portland cement on it and that will dry it up some and cut down on the odor some.

The lime should make quick work of it

If it's not your property, can you call whomever owns it, let them deal? Or the city? That can't be healthy..............hold your nose.
May we all have safe travels.

Thanks for the replies. Is 2 bags of lime enough or should I go get more. how soon before the smell starts to go away. we have had a lot of rain past few days. Is that helping or hurting? Will that wash away the lime or activate it or whatever lime does?

First call to the property owner. Second call would be to the county health department. If they won't do anything, then I'd call the local TV station. Neither of the first two wants publicity.

County health dept. Thats a great idea. I can call the property owner, but I am not sure if he will do anything. It's far enough from his house and usable property that he doesnt smell it. I am afraid coyotes are going to show up.
Thanks again for info.

Whatever ate the head would have finished it off, but not with lime on it. I'd bet there are buzzards around.
Usually the smell is gone within a week, unless it is a really large animal.
