I am getting ready to change the oil in my generator (Onan 5.5) for the first time. My question is does anybody make an oil filter other than than the OEM filter that will fit my generator? Also how long do you usually go between oil changes? My dealer adv that I could go 250 hrs before changing the oil, I think that is way to long. Also any suggestions on the brand and weight of oil. I know it all comes from the ground with some manufactures putting in different additives, and what about adding some Lucas in it? I am pretty sure that this has been posted umpteen times before but any input would be helpful.

I have the Onan 5500 Gold Marquis series (might be the same one) and I just used the OEM filter. I found out ordering it the cost of the shipping was more than the filter. Next time I am in Columbia, MO I am going to go in a buy several over the counter.

As for oil, I just used 10W30 Castrol and I changed ours the first time at 25 hours. I have about 60 on it now but will not change it until next spring.

Look in the Owners Manual for the Onan part number for the filter. Take that number to most any place that sells oil filters and they will have a book that will cross reference Onan to other brands.

I have the same genset in my Outlaw. I just serviced mine.
Used a WIX 57398 oil filter and 2 quarts of 5w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Our local NAPA store just ordered an oil filter for me. $8.03 + tax. I'm sure that's not really a bargain, but at less than $10, it wasn't really worth doing a lot of shopping or driving anywhere to get one. Asked him what kind of filter it was and he said "NAPA Gold made by WIX." As far as the oil, I'm using Mobil 1 10w-30 Synthetic.

Onan calls out SAE 30 or 15w40 for normal usage but there is a temperature chart for guidance. SAE 30 for hot summer usage/lowest oil consumption. 15w40 for multi-season usage except hot extremes.

I've used Napa gold Oil filters but couldn't get air filters there. I found the factory filters at Camping World for around $8 to $10. I have always ran Castrol HD SAE30 in my Onan Gens.
