I currently have a TomTom GPS which is great. The only thing is that it does not avoid little side roads. I was wondering what GPS' do you folks use that might be more specific for RVers. I saw this one and I was wondering if this might be a good option for RVers and specifically Class A's.....

I would recommend this one (but I have always liked and owned Garmin).

I have a Garmin 7200 I think for you Class A owners its a great GPS because of the big 7 inch screen. You can set it for trucks which will keep you mostly on the interstate highways.

There are several websites that evaluate and review GPS units.

I have a Garmin 785, which works great, EXCEPT, in shortest distance, it has put my 40' MH & toad on roads I shouldn't have been on...so I contacted Garmin, and they said they have a new unit specifically for truckers...I don't remember the number, but you should be able to find it on the Garmin webiste....

One that will actually call out the route number or street name.

I have a Magellan 4700 which you have the option of mostly highway when routing. I have read that the Magellan 14XX series are more for commercil vehicles and will route accordingly. The 4700 has a larger (4.7") screen and offers free traffic avoidance if you purchase a separate adapter ($58 at Amazon.com). Used it on our last trip to Helen GA and it did a good job of finding Creekwood RV Park, which the owner claimed was not on most GPS's!

Your problem is one of the main reasons that we went to a laptop computer and run Street Atlas. The program allows you to choose the types of routes, from preferring Interstates to avoiding toll roads. We are fortunate in our Class A to have a flat spot on the dash where the 17" screen can sit. The voice recognition/voice response make it a hands free operation.

All that said, any GPS can put you on a road where you shouldn't be. I plan routes in advance and then examine them, step by step, to see what specific roads the computer selected. With Street Atlas, I can manipulate them with "vias"
