The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep
(extract from Robert Frost’s poem)

Crossing the border at Richford, town settled in 1795 having
only 2200 residents today. Stopped at old railway station to munch on a few grapes. The road will bring us through Enosburg Falls, St-Albans, Burlington and Shelburne.

Shelburne, historical town, part of Silverdune’s growing up between
Quebec and Vermont. A visit to Shelburne cannot be done without a
stop at the Country Store. So many things pleasurable to the eyes
and to the taste (maple ice cream was incredibly good!).

And then again, we needed to go to Robert Frost’s trail at Breadloaf
Mountain. The flood of 2008 had destroyed the trails and bridge.
Only a few poems were read under a mist of rain and twirling of mosquitoes “Reluctance” the last poem read, the feeling applying to the abandon of our journey on his trails.

Our site was on family land, Middlebury River flowing closes to us.
Lama guarding sheep in the pasture and the old barn, witness of time,
and miles of fields created a peaceful camp.

Landscape seen day after day, and yet we are not bored….
Though time for beer and people and up to Middlebury we go!

Good food and local beer at Doria’s restaurant.
Middlebury’s festival that weekend and dancing to jazz in the street!

And from Middlebury to Ripton we go…
Stopping for shopping in another country store, beautiful collection
of old bottles and lanterns decorated the old store.

We hike and visited some caves, not to deep…it is said that a big fat cat lives there!

We walk the covered bridge, as another storm was brewing.

We left Middlebury on the last day of our short trip with a birthday supper at Rosie’s.
Silverdsand seems perplex…why do we have to go back….

“I have come by the highway home, and lo, it is ended.”
(extract from Robert Frost’s poem)

Frost's poem was the quote under my HS Yearbook picture...looks like I was destined to rome around the woods with a TC!

Nice TR Silver. However, whoever keeps the master list is a pretty tough critic. I hope you pass muster for it. The poetry might just push it over the top and get it in.
I think if I were ever taking off to full-time...the eastern seaboard would be high on my list, especially New England. I've spent some time there, but mostly when I was younger (my family was from western New York and they had some property near Keene, New Hampshire - in fact we still have a little bit) so I'd really like to get back there. These trip reports may not seem as spectacular as the giant vistas in the TR's from out west, but they have a beauty all their own that must be seen first hand. You can almost hear the sounds and smell the smells in your pictures.
Thanks!

Bill: that's truly incredible. Looks like we're of the same spirit!
Farctic: ...you bet! It went into TR faster'n you could say TR
Rich & Liz: we hope to see you at the PA Rally! We've got some beer (and Silverdunes: some wine to taste with Liz) to taste
BTG: You really touched on the subtle difference between the East & West; only someone with long time experience in both worlds could write what you've written. Cheers

The Silvers - Middlebury is one of our favorite towns anywhere! Thanks for posting some cool northern photos. We're down in VA where it feels like a tropical rain forest with alternating blazing sun and gully washer rain showers. I'll take our northern cool.
See ya'll at the rally in PA

I think that I shall never see
A trip report as nice as thee.
Looking makes me want to go
Where Silver's gone with wife in tow.
And even though the trip is over
Again you'll go, you're quite the rover.
(Slight takeoff from Joyce Kilmer haha)
Cheers to you and Silverdunes, wonderful composed pics and good read. Good choice of poem!!

TwoMaineiacs - Virginia is precisely where will be headed, before or after PA! Will see you at the Rallye
Whazoo - you're quite a poet and writer! (I think you know it). Glad that you enjoyed the poetry of this trip report. I wanted to go a bit further with the poetry but Silversand reined me in!
