We are looking for a location (preferrable within 400 miles of Phoenix, AZ) to view the fall colors - hopefully a place that has the brilliant reds and oranges enjoyed by those in the midwest and northeast. Is that possible? Would appreciate any suggestions.

Its only going to be possible if you have an abundance of Maples and Sycamores so not likely in the south west, goo d excuse for a trip to the northeast ..

Check the AZ Highways mag website. They show photos of that from time to time.

Yes, last fall we drove around Humphreys Peak (in the Jeep) using Forest Service roads 552 and 418 through Lockett Meadow and then south on FS-151 to US-180. Some color at Lockett Meadow, but overall disappointing. Guess we'll have to drive to the Ozarks for real color.

Red an article not long ago rating top ten national forests for fall color, and they list Coconino N.F. in AZ as #6 I think. Might check it out.

If your 400 miles is one way you might think about a trip to Southern Colorado in late Sept or early Oct... North from Durango up over Molas Pass to Siverton & Red Mountain Pass & Ouray Colo. Very beautiful

The white mountains are pretty when the aspen change color. The challenge is timing it right as the colors only last a couple of weeks. Too early, and they are green, too late and they are brown.

Through out the SW (including Colorado) aspens are your dominant color tree, with cottonwoods at lower altitudes. With the right sunlight those can be as pretty as any, but they don't give you reds.
