Hi I just purchased a explorer 2006 v8 and took out my 26ft 4000lbs trailer for the first time. the truck pulled it more than easily but experienced alot of sway!!!!! I have the torsion bars and sway control installed. Used to tow with a 2004 dakota v8 4.7 it ha da harder time towing but never swayed.
the ball seemed a bit higher on the explorer so i lowered it hoping that was the problem... since the back of the rv was lower than rhe front
Any help would be appeciated.
thx

Can you post some pics of your set up? That Explorer with the IRS should be better overall than the Dakota.

Definitely check tire ratings and pressure. Also check your loading so you have the proper tongue weight. Your shocks probably need to be replaced though I doubt they have much effect on sway. Try to tow the trailor dry if possible.

An Explorer towing anything is an accident looking for a place to happen. The shortest Dakota wheelbase is as long as your Explorer. Your Dakota may very well have had a 20" longer wheelbase than your Exploder. I have an Explorer Sport-Trac and I consider it a marginal tow vehicle for a light boat. You are simply asking too much of it. IMNTBHO

What TYPE of anti sway system are you using? Is it set up CORRECTLY? Assuming you have a friction bar. If so is it tightened COMPLETELY or are you trying to ADJUST it by using the handle (can't do that). Tires and suspension COULD be part of your problem and a high tongue can cause sway issues also so there are a lot of possibilities without much information from you to help in correcting it.

Lots of possibilities. IMO, 26' is too long for an Explorer, but with a really good sway control system that's set up properly, you should be at least marginally ok. (Assuming all the weights are within specs.)

Swaybars are no more use than a bandaid on an amputation.
Too little truck and too much trailer.

We towed a little 18 foot Keystone Hobbi Toyhauler, and it was way too much for the '03 Explorer Limited V-8 we were using, to the point that it bent one of the rear axles, even with properly attached sway control, we had that thing way overworking.
