Yesterday morning, pulling out of garage, I saw a blackish cat in the yard. Last evening when I got home DW saw it siting outside the porch. When she went outside it was all over her, in a good way. It came right up to me and let me pick it up. No tags. So she asked neighbors and nobody know whose it is. (we live in the woods and have 2 dogs and inside cat)

So I wanted to leave it out, she was afraid it would get hit by car. After some discussion we called animal control and they piked it up. She was very upset as to it's fate after they left.

Did we do the right thing? ( I am hoping it was chipped, btw it had all claws)

As a side note the guy that picked it up was a jerk. Tried to use the clamper thing an it and I hand put it in the crate. Then he said "cats are becoming disposable, like hamsters". This did not make DW feel very good.

It could be the cat was dumped off like a lot of them are. I hope that it will have a good ending and find a home but i'm afraid that its more than likely going to end up like a lot of animals do...being put down.
You did the right thing if you could not take it into your home and love it as your own. It's better that it be taken some place to be put down in a kind and quick way than to be hit by a car or starved to death or run down by dogs.
I'm don't own a cat because my husband is allergic to them but have owned many in the past. They do not need much just a little love and attention and food with a dry bed to make a cat happy. Just wish people would see them as a living thing and not a disposable item.
Sorry I couldnt help in easing your pain of calling animal control. but if you find your able to take this cat into your home then you could always go and get it from them and adopt it from the shelter that way everyone is in a win win situation.

If it was a kitten the odds are it will have a chance of being adopted...an adult cat? No comment...every these days wants cute littl cuddly kittens to adopt and forget about the adult cats...it's a shame!

Good points all and understand. As far as taking it ourselves, we would have in a heartbeat but our cat is EXTREMELY intolerant of other cats. It is unbelievable how she reacts, fine with dogs but cats? No way. So I don't think we had a choice, did not know of anyone else who would/could either.

Still does not make us feel any better though..

Thanks for your comments.

As said above - if you absolutely can not take it in, you did the best thing. If you have rethought and can take it in, call AC right now and tell them you are coming to get it. Its odds in a shelter are probably not good - particularly if the rest of the personnel have the same attitude as the AC guy. Sorry that doesn't make you feel better but it is reality.

When faced with leaving a small animal on their own, in either a rural or urban setting since either have their own set of dangers to a little one, or calling to have it picked up. Truly having it picked up is the best pick of those two options. At least if the kitty has to be put down it won't suffer like it likely would out in the cruel world.

Chances are someone dumped it but then again it could be a barn cat that wandered away from it's home... I wish they could talk and tell us their story.

You did the right thing. Hit by cars, starving, eaten by coyotes (which btw where you live they are 'very' prevelant), is not a humane way to let a animal die. You did this cat a big favor, it most likely woule have been lunch to the coyotes by nightfall.

I would tell your DW not to worry about 'this' guys attitude. The people who pick up for animal control have NOTHING to do with the actual shelter that the animal will go to. They are paid by the county to pick up animals and that is their sole part in it they do not work within the shelters.

For future reference, you could google for no-kill animal shelters in your area. Chances are there are several. Trouble is, they're usually full.

If DW is still really worried about the kitty, call the shelter and ask how long they keep them. I'm sure that, unless the animal has a highly contagious disease or is intractable, they don't put them down right away, but keep them a certain amount of time - usually a week or so - before doing the deed. If so, consider placing notices of the cat's location in local vets' offices - or calling them - in case the owner might be searching.

Worst case scenario - they do put them down humanely, with an injection that makes them go to sleep before the heart stops. Probably pretty painless and peaceful - MUCH better than being a coyote's dinner or dying in pain on a highway somewhere.

Whether or not the same people staff the shelter itself as do patrols and pick-ups depends on the jurisdiction. Here they do.

Most animal control peeps will come off as "jerks" when you first meet them. His comment sounds very much like someone who has seen a great deal too many animals come and go and die due to the irresponsibility of humans. They are pretty much all trauma cases as near as I can tell. Most of those I've met do love animals and that makes the job something they want to do, but also much much harder. Takes a little while to get past those defenses but if you did you'd probably see a very different side.

If your DW is concerned, I would not recommend just a "forget about it" approach. Checking in to see what is going on with the cat may end up with a cat on your hands that needs placing (start running through those lists of friends and family now!) but not asking leaves that little splinter of guilt in the ribs to fester. Personally, I'd rather place a cat!
