Sometimes when I haven't driven my F450 6.4 for a week or so, when I first start up and start to drive it sounds like it is "racing". Was thinking maybe just the turbos coming up to speed because I get very little boost until I have driven about 1/2 mile, then all seems normal. RPMs only go to 1800-2000 on trannie. Any thoughts?

Could be. I'll pay real close attention.

My bet would be the fan as well. I have an 09 Super Duty that will ocasionally engage the fan on first start-up on a warm day and the fan will stay on for the first few minutes of operation. I'm not sure what logic is causing the fan to come on as nothing in the vehicle should be at an elevated temperature.

I think the programming helps with A/C cool down form a cold engine start on a hot day. Engine fan clutch engages to bring cool air over the A/C condenser to help with cool air in the cab.

that sounds like the description of how the fan sounds on my antique 99 ford psd

Also that big boy probably also has a fluid drive thermostatically actuated fan clutch. It takes a little spinning to get things all evened out in there and the clutch to free wheeling. At least that is the way they operated back in the old days.
