GM ALL... Be safe and enjoy your adventure.

Currently living in NC. I was wondering if one of the first steps was to establish residency before you go FT and purchase a RV, i.e. South Dakota.... ? Better tax break, lower taxes, etc...

Thank you in Advance..

Peter

well doing so would let you avoid the issue of being a "tax cheat" and registering it out of state.

That's what we did - we saved over $3000 in registration & tax by becoming South Dakota residents first, then buying the motorhome from a nearby dealer in Ohio. We were on the road almost immediately, so there was no problem with Ohio laws.

We did the same thing last year when we bought our coach and toad in Texas where we then lived.

I had already called Terri at MyDakotaAddress.com to set up an address with her.

When I bought the coach and toad, I told them I would be registering them out of state, so I was not charged TX sales tax and registration fees.

I then overnighted my bills of sale to Terri. 3 days later I had my tags and registrations back.

According to South Dakota law, we then had 90 days to get to SD to get our drivers licenses and become official residents.

We did this two months later on our way to Alaska. Also registered to vote. And coming back thru there in October, my wife and I paid our $10 each and got our concealed carry permits.

We saved almost $7000 in sale taxes and it only costs $250 each year for tags for both vehicles.

Go for it!

S.D. does have a 3% sales/use tax the first time you register a vehicle unless you can prove you paid more than 3% in another state.

Full timers determine where they will call home, not anyone or any government can require you to reside in a specific state. You will not be a "tax cheat" by re-locating to South Dakota and saving money. Go for it and enjoy!

We re-located from Virginia to Florida to reduce/eliminate/avoid excess taxes. Will save almost $24,000 over 10 years on vehicle personal property taxes and Florida has NO income tax. May save even more personal property taxes if we purchase more expensive vehicles. Isn't it great to live in such a wonderful free country?

Spell Check Has Been Improved, but not completely corrected!

There is a 3% sales tax on the difference between the traded in coach and the new one if the new one is more expensive. If you go the other way, there isn't. If you've paid a sales tax that is higher than SD you get credit, but probably no refund from the original state.

I actually live in SD and they are talking about raising the tax, and have already raised driv. license fees, so get it a bit cheaper while you can.

I assume you are referring to South Dakota licensing. It is actually a 3% vehicle excise tax. It has been in place for years. You can find the information here.
