Hi,
Just a quick question on pac brakes. Do you drive with it on all the time or switch it on when you feel the circumstances warant it?
Thanks,
Ron

I do NOT drive with it on all the time-- I would really miss my favorite "gear"-- COASTING.
I do drive with it on all the time in stop and go traffic ONLY.
Other than that, I only turn it on as needed AND use transmission down/up arrows to select the gear I want (I had Allison ECU reprogrammed for a 5th gear pre-select).

I keep my exhaust brake on full time. The best way to maintain one is to use it.
On my setup, it is very easy to feather the fuel pedal when I want the pac brake to disengage while coasting.
The problem I have is I should use the service brakes more then I do, to keep them in good shape. Each trip,I have to remember to do a few reasonably hard stops to keep them cleaned up.

I don't leave it on all the time, unless I am in heavy traffic or driving on the mountains.

I last turned it off over five years ago and didn't like the free wheeling "coasting". It's been on all of the time since, including several trips over the Siskiyou mountains in winter.
The instruction manual says to leave it off in ice and snow, but that's when I really like the retard feature of the exhaust brake. I can slow the coach down without locking up the front brakes and loosing steering. It's like gearing down in a sports car in slippy weather to maintain control.

Mine stays on all the time and I use it regularly.....109,000 miles on the clock and 70% left on the service brakes....I'm good with that....Dennis

I don't have an on/off switch. I have a foot switch. The pac brake is on when I step on the switch and off when I don't. I use it all the time.

I had to have 2-injectors replaced while driving thru Colorado into Nevada, then by the time I went thru CA & back home to Illinois another two injectors had to be replaced.
The Cummins mechanic said using the Pac Brake is hard on them & recommenced not using it for long periods of time so the cylinders could get a chance to cool down.
