I just had my Directv receivers and satellite dish upgraded. I took the new receiver out of the bedroom and took it out to the camper to see how it would work. I hooked up the receiver and then navigated to the "signal strength" meter. Hmmmm, no beeping....
From where I had the dish located, I could look through the camper window and see the tv screen so I was able to watch the strength bar and get the dish aimed correctly.
I figured there had to be some way to turn on the "beeping" but I looked in all the menus and could find nothing. After the technician installed my new equipment he left me his phone number in case I had any questions so I called him to ask about the beeping signal strength meter. He told me THEY DON'T BEEP ANYMORE!
If the DW is around, she can watch the screen but what do you do if you're by yourself and you have to position the dish somewhere where you can't see the tv?
Anyone come up with a solution to this problem?

When I had my TT and had to set up a portable DirecTV dish I had a small TV set that I could take out with me and hook up a short cable to. It was a lot easier to find the signal by watching the TV than to be yelling back and forth for signal strength.

Yes, it's a new HD receiver with an 18" round dish.

I had little luck with the $15 meters. Seems the only thing they did was make a loud noise. I covered the hole with tape to quiet them down. They just don't seem to have a very smooth tuning curve. They work, just not great. I bought a good meter though pricey that I love. I don't need the receiver to set up the dish because it has a built in battery. The Satellite Buddy works well for me.
My HD receiver does not have the beeping either. It has the menu to turn it on and off but it never has beeped. My standard def receiver beeps.
Your round dish needs to be compatible for the high def to work properly. That said, I have a standard dish with two lnb feeds that I used last week to run my HD receiver. What happens is that you tune to a HD channel and it says call Direct with error 771 or such. The solution is to go into the menu system and set up a seperate "favorites" list that has only standard definition channels. It will record and play back just fine then without the error messages. If you don't have the HD dish then you won't need any B band converters that may be attached to the inputs to your receiver.
Now you might have a new dish with SWM (single wire multiplex) and be just fine with one wire going into the HD receiver. I haven't tried one of those yet but will in the next few weeks at my year round rv park.

Unfortunatly you will have to wait until wife is there. Mine does not beep either. You could get several mirrors and line them up.
Those meters will tell you other sats as well. I don't even use the meter anymore. More trouble than it was worth.

I use the handheld meter and it works fine for me. Sweep once and notice any signal at all, sweep second time to pinpoint satellite. Check signal on TV. About six or seven minutes for a great signal with DISH. Being single, I had to come up with something.

Well, this is not good news. I've relied on beeps for years with my old Hughes receiver. Drat.. meter time I guess.

I use the same one, it works great.
Find a sat, turn down the gain, peek signal again, done.
