Topic: Oil change GM Vortec 8.1

Posted By: dgsanders on 08/28/09 12:39pm

I'm going to change the oil in my coach for the first time myself. Last year CW charged $60, this year they wanted $85. I haven't been able to find information on how many quarts the 2005 Workhorse Vortec 8.1 takes.

Also, the coach has about 12,000 miles. Does any see any problem in using Synthetic?

according to the web site it takes 6 qts, plus one for the oil filter.

The engine does take 6 qts, but the extra qt depends on what size oil filter you use. If you use a small one, it takes an extra .5 qt, big one - 1 qt, really big one - 2 qts. Don't over fill it. WH says to break in the engine for about 12K miles before switching over to syn oil. Don't forget about the 11 chassis grease zerks while you're at it.

Switch to the Delco PF932, or equal, and fill to the proper place on your dipstick, when the coach is level, and sitting on the ground on it's wheels. A coach that is level with the levelers may not have the engine at the right level. The PF932 filter is 8" long compared to the standard filter which is 3" long. It should take close to 6 quarts.

I changed to Mobil 1 at 5000 miles, many new vehicles come from the factory with synthetic oil.

I use the napa 1qt filter and refill with 7 qts oil. Makes life alot easier.

The AC Delco PF454 oil filter is the EOM reccomended filter listed in both the Workhorse Chassis Guide and by GM dealers for the Vortec 8.1. Other filters will fit, but why use something other than the filter reccomended by the manufacturer.

Not sure where the quotes for mileage requirements for switch to synthetic are, but their not in the chassis guide or owners manual. GM fills many of their engines with Mobil 1 straight from th factory. Your choice on what you use as long as it meets the quality requirements.
