When the pump shuts off, I just shut everything down and get on down the road. Usually, the shut-off point is only a couple gallons from full, anyway, so I see no reason to swipe my card (or a different card) again.
I have talked to the bank, I have talked to the station managers, and I have talked to the card companies. They ALL deny that it is THEIR policy to limit sales. I have come to the conclusion that it must be the owners of the credit card processing machines that set the limits. The oil company doesn't own those card readers, the station doesn't own them, the bank doesn't own them, they are owned and maintained by a private company, so I have been told.
I have seen their advertising, as well!
Basicly, it is one of the many inconveniences of modern life. I refuse to let it upset me.
Yaknow, I've NEVER had this problem since I learned to punch the "pay inside" button and take my card with....and that's with up to 75 or 80 gallons of diesel last year.....not a big deal to "go inside" since it's not miles down the road from the pump and it always feels good to stretch the legs...IMHO, of course

There is another solution that hasn't been mentioned. A lot of Wal-Marts have the option of buying a pre-paid card and giving you .03 cents per gallon off the posted price. In my town Wally world has the lowest price anyway and I get it .03 cents lower than that. When we get ready for a long trip I will go in a buy a gas card and put about $500 on it and then I can pump as much as I want up to that amount without and nozzle shut offs. It sure beats the alternative.
I also second the idea of Flying J. As far as I'm concerned they are the very best for RV'ers. Easy in and out and very competitive prices. I fueled up once a Tulsa Flying J that even had a sewer dump at the fuel island! Only problem is there is not a Flying J in my town! Big T

I agree with the comments on Flying J. I have not had the problem with the pump shutting off on me as my TV in some time as I only have an Expedition with a 25 gallon tank. But when it did happen I was a little upset. Just stinks esp if you are putting in a 10 hour day of driving and have to screw around pumping gas.

I won't leave my credit card with anyone. I tell them to debit my account (prepay to the pump) my guesstimate of the price. If I pump less they have always returned the amount to my credit card. This is a policy at Pilot stations in Nevada and Utah. They will not "hold" your credit card while you pump fuel.
Its a different time from when you could pull up to the pump, clear it and pump your fuel and go inside and pay. You just have to get used to it. It will get worse.
I send my wife in with an inactive card to give to the attendant, they turn on the pump, I pump continuously until full and go inside and tell them to use this card instead. Exchange for a good card, sign the ticket and I'm good to go.
