Anybody know the engine oil capacity for the 8.1? Doing my first oil change on the rig tomorrow and I'm not sure since it didn't come with any manuals. It's an 05 Gulfstream on an 04 Kodiak Chassis.

I did a search and found this series of posts - oil capacity for 8.1 chevy. I would be a little skeptical as there can be some differences in oil pan size between the 8.1 in a pickup versus a Class 5 truck. I would wait for someone to answer who has a manual for the 2004 Gulfstream.

I would put in 5 qts. Run the motor long enough to check for leaks. Pull the dip stick & add as required.

My 8.1 Chevy takes 7 quarts because
I use the optional large 2 quart WIX 51794 oil filter.
More oil = more cooling capacity.

thanks doggydaddy, I remember my father doing the same with his 80 Chevy pickup. I'll check under the coach today to make sure it will fit, then try to find one this afternoon. That kind of thinking is why I use this forum as my main resource rather than just doing a google search. Hands on smart beats book smart every time! : ) Thanks all for your help.

My 2008 Kodiak with 8.1 uses 10 qts with filter. Right out of the manual in my lap. 5w30 specd. I also found the allison tranny filter at autozone and changed that at 5k miles. My coach came with a yellow piece of paper that stated that it must be changed at 5k miles. Hope this helps.

Thats exactly what I came up with.

I double checked it after reading this post as I had just ordered a case of AMSOIL. I figure if it takes 10 Ill keep an extra 2 on hand.

livinglos- do you have a filter # for that tranny filter? I only have 1500 miles on my coach but I will need to change that filter out soon.
