We assume the manual is right when it says 12' 6". The big question, as stated by a previous poster, is how accurate those signs are. We carry a sonic measuring device to check unmarked bridges, anything less than 12' 6" will force a go around.
We came across one marked 12' this last trip. It was at dusk. We had that "got to get there" mentality and took a short cut to the park. Coming across that bridge forced me to drive in reverse for a 1/4 mile as it got pitch black. One thing you have to keep with an RV, your sense of humor. We laughed about it later over a nice bottle of wine, once we made it into the park.

Dumb question - how do you measure this?
The only way I can think of to do this is to wait until the airbags are at driving pressure and and then to measure from the edge of the roof to the ground and then measure the highest damagable protrubance from the roof (probably the satellite dome in my case) and add that measurement on to the ground-to-roof measurement. That still doesn't account for the fact that a fiberglass roof is a bit taller in the middle than on the sides.
I've been relying on the factory manual/specs to know the height of my MH, but I sure would like to know it's actual height in case of getting into a marginal situation.

Please elaborate. Just what is a "sonic measuring device"? Sounds like something I might want....

Well,my rig the "Advertised" height is 12'6" and I've gone under a bridge with an advertised height of 12'6"
I've also climbed up on the roof with a tape measure and verified that the rig is a bit shorter than advertised.
Why is this: THe advertised height is empty. NO water, NO waste, only a little gas (Perhaps five gallons) and no food, cloths, "Junk"or people.
You add all that stuff, fill up the tanks, Fill the closets and fridge, fill the basement with stuff...................
And it gets shorter
However, the idea of taking it up with a tape measure.... GOOD IDEA
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

On the Monaco spec sheet our shows 11'11" overall height, however, I measured ours right after purchasing it and it actually measures 12'1" to the top of the A/C units and 12'4" to the top of the satellite dome. I hope most are not going off of the specifications and are actually measuring them. Mike.

It's a little gizmo that is used a lot in the real estate industry for measuring room sizes. I think it costs about $15-30 and is available at most home improvement centers, WalMart, Target, etc.
One quick example
Just place it on the road and aim the laser directly up. You'll get an exact measurement. It's a great thing for unmarked low bridges.
We came across one on our travels that had a lot of scrapes, it measured at 12' 8", just barely enough for us.
