Does anyone remember the handheld tool with a little wheel that you could roll along a road on a map and it would measure the mileage? My Dad had one when I was a kid and I'd love to have one to plan trips now. Any idea where I can find one? It kind of looked like a fat pen. Thanks.

This is what I like about this forum. You can ask about some way out there thing and someone will give an answer.
I do doubt the accuracy of the device. .25% is pretty accurate. My guess is that 25% would be closer. Good luck

Maps? You're still using paper maps?
Or do you plan to run it across your computer screen?

While there are certainly some laptops one can take to the loo, a good Benchmark is still more convenient.......I don't leave home without 'em.

Most maps have the milage printed on them. You can add them up for a total. JMHO

Or do you plan to run it across your computer screen? I, for one, hope to always be using paper maps. Call me old school, but there's nothing like spreading a big map or atlas out on the floor to plan a trip (or to respond to someone's question here). I have everything from 100's of 1:24,000 USGS topo sheets to gas station maps from the 1930's.
BTW, I have the Brunton version of the device the OP was talking about.

Still use paper maps as well, as I've found many of the computerized tools to not always be that accurate.

Why do you question the accuracy? Do you have one or have used one?
