The OP wants to tether a phone. His carrier is AT&T.
If you upgrade you probably should get a 3G capable phone. You don't have to get a smartphone. There are many more phones besides the ones listed on the EVDOinfo site that you can tether with. There are no lists on the AT&T site of tetherable phones. They only have a list of phones that work with the current version of their Connection Manager software. You do not have to use the connection manager sofware.

We don't? Could you elaborate on that?
Thanks, Sage
Also, My LG Shine (CU720) is a 3G. Got it as a reman on the AT&T site. I think it was $20. Got my wife's Samsung SGH-A737 (also 3G, but have not tried to tether it) the same way and it was even cheaper.

To tether you have to configure the phone, then create the dial up connection.
Handset Configuration
The above link will take you to the phone setup. HSDPA is for a 3G phone. If you hae an EDGE phone use the link on the second line to configure it.
To create the dial up connection follow these instructions.
Create Windows Dial up Connection
You can USB or bluetooth to connect the phone to a laptop. To use USB you have to load the USB driver for the phone. If you use bluetooth all that is needed is for the phone and laptop to be paired. In the instructions, when you get to 'Connection Name' I use the phone model and the connection type, USB or bluetooth.
All phones are configured for data already.
After you finish creating the dialup connection open 'network connections'. Right click the connection you just made and select 'create shortcut'. Put the shortcut on the desktop.
All of that is for XP. It just takes a little more to drill down to the dialup connections.

pick the new ATT phone you like, before you BUY, check the internet to verify the connection capability and instructions for doing so, MOST new phones can function as a modem.
even the iphone IF you jail break it.
blackberries & WINdows MObile smart phones/PPC are (2) good choices, as you already have a data plan and internet connection for the phone, so you add an ICS ( internet connection sharing ) program to the device and tether by cable or BT or maybe wifi, to the PC
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

How do you tether an iPhone???? AT&T is not allowing this feature on iPhone until some undetermined date. By following these instructions: How to tether an iPhone and then, if you are running XP, by installing iTunes 8.2x which includes the modem driver. Then all you do is connect your phone to the PC and it is on the Internet.

Hi all
hopefully someone can answer this question. i have ATT dsl which includes a dial up account and cell acct is cingular(aka att). i have a usb bluetooth adapter which i know works on the desk top but have yet to hook up to the laptop(new-old one died). laptop is an hp g60-441us and the phone is samsung sync a707 which is 3g/bluetooth. can i use this setup to access my dial up? sure it would be easier to get the plan with internet access but working on a shoe string here. know in the old days i used to do it with the older phones and the data cable but also rem it was super slow.
DW recently got into puters/internet big time and on our last outing she was having 'farmville' and 'yoville' (and a few other 'ville's ) withdraw. funny, had puters in the house for +20 yrs now and she has a desktop which didn't really interest her till she started playing these 'ville games on facebook. now she's eyeing my laptop-alot waiting on a replacement hdd for the old laptop and she can have that.
thanks in advance

Yep...and it costs double what tethering costs. What are the typical restrictions on tethering like amount of data transferred or bandwidth limits. Also the actual cost.
For comparison the Verizon air card is 5GB/month and costs $60. And a cell phone is extra. The bandwidth varies but is generally quite adequate.

Yes, you can use what you have described to tether the laptop using the A707. You would be connecting the phone to the AT&T network. You need a decent phone signal in the home. If it is 3G all the better. The feature(as at&t calls it now) you would need on the phone is "Data Unlimited", $15 a month. On a family plan, if you have "Messaging Unlimited for Families", $30 a month the "Family Data Unlimited" is $10 a month per phone.
I would not recommend the tethered phone as your only connection for the home.
Get the bluetooth adapter working on the laptop, get a data plan for the phone and follow the information in my post in this thread.
For tethering I prefer to use bluetooth, no cables. You can still make and receive calls while your phone is tethered with AT&T.
