We got the RV exemption and use American Direct so we have the national networks while on the road. New York City, East Coast and San Francisco, West Coast, they come in on 119. American Direct is about $10 for east and west and come in at starting channel 241 on Dish Our Wineguard isn't dual and we don't want to carry another dish.
We do the same, RV exemption and American Direct for the local networks from east and west coast. Works fine for us.
I have been on the road for 24 weeks, and have called to have access to the local channels in various locations throughout the country. Most times it was easy...simply call customer service and request it. One time I called, and the operator said NO....it's against their policy. I told her I had been doing for 15 weeks at that point...she said, that was wrong, and they shouldn't have done it. I asked to speak to her supervisor....she was gone awhile, and came back on and said the supervisor would validate what she said. I asked to speak to him anyway. After 10 minutes, I got his voice recorder. By then I was furious.
I called the next day, got an offshore operator who said no problem, and beamed me the locals. Have not had another issue since then.
From what I see, Direct is no better.....

Can you get local stations from Dish at home? If so, you will get them when you travel, so long as you stay inside the spot beam for those local stations.
Satellite providers do not furnish local stations for all TV markets. They furnish locals only for markets where those stations are willing to sell their programming to the satellite providers, and there is enough of a customer base to make it worthwhile to the satellite provider to buy and re-sell that programming.
Big sections of the U.S. get no programming from "local" stations rebroadcast via satellite. I know, I'm in one of the areas.

Hi Shirley,I'm trying to get by with the old analog sets for now. I have the converter box but I absolutey hate it. Shootout??
I understand. We are using the converter box at the house. I haven't installed it in the motorhome yet.
Ronnie also hates it. It now takes 4 remotes to watch TV. But I must say it is a good picture. Better than we have ever had for our so called "local" stations.
"Shootout" was absolutely fantastic. We are hoping to hookup with you two next week to take you up on your offer. Not sure what your schedule will be though. It would be like Tuesday through Thursday? Are you running those days?

This is interesting. I asked for the waiver from Direc over the phone. Took about 6 weeks to get a letter telling me it was an additional $14 a month for East or West coast. I was surprised because I always heard it was free. Oh well, the crank up worked most of the time....and since they went digital, better picture than the satelite!

Jerry, if you still have questions give me a call this weekend. We have had a Dish receiver in both the old and new coach for many years. Getting info from Dish is a******shoot depending on the call center you get directed to.
In a nutshell, your locals will not be available as they are transmitted on a spot beam to cover a certain area. As mentioned above, All American does offer east and west network feeds for a reasonable price. We have used this service for two years both on the road and at home.
Now, if 'ya want a nice new good antenna, meet me in Texas this winter and while Deb and Sandi visit you and I can mount a nice new Winegard Traveler satellite antenna on the Dolphin.

I have Dish with a Kingdome that has only one LNB on it. There for awhile Dish would complain alot about giving you the local channels when you would get out of the home zone, BUT, lately they have changed their attitude and have been very cooperative with me. I left for three months from my house and I called Dish and told them where I was going to be and that I would like to recieve the local channels from that area. They said NO PROBLEM! I had the local channels through my Kingdome from the satellite. When I got back home I called them that I was back and that I wanted the local channels out of Los Angeles and they hooked me right up.
I really have not had any major problems with Dish, but I am going to change to Direct on the 16th of this month. They made me an offer I couldn't resist. I will save something like thirty dollars a month, I will get 200 plus channels, plus the local channels and three high definition DVR's. So I am going to give them a try and see what happens.

but the OP has Dish.
that large circle over Denver reminds me of a previous situation where the person could get his denver locals a long ways from denver in a location where if a person lived they had to take some other locals and couldn't be given Denver ones.

You may want to read more about your contract with Direct, If it is like what they wanted me to do, your monthly rate will change after the first 12mos and almost double...
